is there a way to tag a user in a post so they get a notification someone is talking to or about them? FB has this, i've had a few occasions lately here where it would be useful to alert someone to something important which might get missed in a larger thread.

Uh.... I don't think so, at least not out of the box. A couple options:

PM the person when they are mentioned (probably not what you are looking for)

Another option might be setting a google alert, but it looks like they stripped out the ability to limit results to a particular site.

I do know another forum I use where you actually get a popup message if you are quoted in a post... but it doesn't pop up just at the mention of the username.

I think what he's saying is more like tagging someone using @username, like you can do in FB, twitter, G+, etc. So that user knows they have a post directed at them, but weren't necessarily quoted.

i wasn't thinking every time someone was quoted, tho other's might like that.. i was thinking of a way to call a person's attention to a specific post by (for example) putting @NICK if i wanted you to get a notice of something while you might not even be involved in the discussion yet.

as in i wanted YOU to see this but cutting&pasting and then PM'ing you would get old fast.

I started looking at this today, it's kinda dumb b/c you have to use the @symbol and then a semicolon after. Like @gmcunni; what's up.

I don't think that would be so bad.

[MENTION=769]bvibert[/MENTION] lets see if this works then.

Also, apparently you don't need the semicolon, must have been an earlier version.

Wonder if I can mention myself? [MENTION=14536]Nick[/MENTION]

FYI, this is what it is supposed to do:

Front-End
Statistics Page
Top X Tagged
Top X Mentioned
Lite: Locked to Top 5
BBCode Toolbar Icon
MENTION BBCode - auto inserted on install, can be disabled by admin
@username in a post to "mention" a user
Changes @username to a link to that user's profile
Sends a forum notification to that user
Quote a post to alert a user
Sends a forum notification to that user
Tag an user in a thread to alert them to the thread
List of tagged users above the thread action toolbar
Link to view full list of tagged users
"Tag User" button expands a text field for adding a new user to tag
Checking of tagged users to prevent getting tagged multiple times
Ability to tag all your friends by checking a checkbox instead of typing out usernames
New tab in an user's profile showing a list of their tags
Lists both incoming and outgoing tags

It claims I tagged [MENTION=3762]gmcunni[/MENTION] in my post further back where I quoted [MENTION=14536]Nick[/MENTION] who had tagged gmcunni. That seems like a bit of a bug.

Also, it would be cool if you could set it to email you if you were tagged. I hardly ever look at the notification indicator...
