I saw that he had applied, and had made it to the final few contenders, but I hadn't heard that he had actually gotten the job.

Good for you Matt, and good luck on the new venture!

I hope Magic is able to find someone even half as passionate to take his spot.

Our loss is Eaglecrest's gain. Matt did an outstanding job at Magic. I don't think there was anything he couldn't do.

Good luck Matt and family

WRT to the AZ Challenge, Alex Kaufman (our own DJAK) is taking over for Matt. He sent me an email this morning that it would be a little bit of time before he gets to the questions; but to whet your appetite:

And oh yeah to question #1 - Black will run this winter on an as needed basis (when the line at Red says so). Will provide lots more details soon.

Also - in the meantime, our facebook page is a great source of info (not just from the mountain, but from our region and guests). http://facebook.com/skimagicvt

Looks like Alex won't be working his magic at Magic after all, best of luck in your job search Alex.

Right where I want to be
Who is this "part-time resident mountain shareholder who had previously been delivering some consulting, was now going to be operating as the VP of Marketing, a role which had never existed before."? Sounds like whom ever made this decision really screwed Alex...

There are two sides to every story and the truth usually is somewhere in the middle. I have heard from both sides and am sad things didn't work out. I would listen to both parties before passing judgement.

Whoa, bummer. When I was outta college and unemployed, I once got offered a job but received a call the day before my start date telling me not to show up. Such a terrible feeling. I can't even imagine having been in the middle of a move and house purchase with a family and getting that type of call (granted, it still sounds like a position was available but a big step down which is just about the same). Looks like some good karma in that slope fillers link... talk about glowing recommendations in the comments!

I think it does say something that at the end of the article linked to above, the email states:

I still hope to get a few days in at Magic this winter and urge ya’ll to do the same. That place is vintage Vermont skiing at its best. I wish the team in place there a fantastic season. Hoping I can have one too somewhere.”
So obviously there is some understanding. However, that said, Magic's new VP of Marketing should set the record straight ASAP as I doubt most people are going to pick up on that last line. Without context, it certainly looks like a dick move.

No dick moves. Just an unintentional bummer. More like seriously crossed signals combined with bad timing. I was told that I was being hired to steer the marketing ship and was coming in to take Matt's place (and that's what I was applying for), while the previous consultant and now shareholder VP was being told something similar about his future and understandably expected it to occur.

Until I was hired I was told that there was a shareholder who was doing consulting. After I was hired there was a VP in place. Seems like that was unintentional miscommunication, but still occured for whatever reason. It's a very small operation and two folks with very similar responsibilities (with me being 2nd mate) didn't make a lot of sense for me. Especially if I was planning to move my family to the mountain.

Hope they have a great year. Trying to stay positive. Though my life is pretty messed up at the moment and I do need to employ the help of my industry supporters to help me land on my feet (thus that plea on Slopefillers which I tried to stay positive on as well).

Think it will all work out for the best and I hope we can wish both sides the best.
