Yup,another negative Beast thread. Not really, just reporting what I just saw on their snow report.

Unfortunately, Ma Nature is not always kind, and the brutal cold she brought on Sunday has shown no mercy to our lifts. The bitter conditions were especially hard on the electrical /mechanical systems of the Bear Mountain Quad and Skye Peak Express Quad. While we continue to work to resolve these issues, the Bear Mountain area will most likely not open on Monday.

was headed up today on one of those 2 for 1 vouchers but saw the report last night and bailed - superstar lift was reported not working last night but seems to be OK this morning.

The older lifts I could see having issues, maybe. But the SPX not running now that is weird. Truth be told Ski Patrol probably axed the day because they didn't want people getting frostbite.

Sugarloaf suffered the same on Friday and Saturday. It happens. -50 to-60 wind chills for a few days will mess with the lifts. Sucks bad but its the way it is.

Lifts break. It is extremely unfortunate that both lifts for Bear broke simultaneously, and both require extensive down time for repair. The only thing worse would have been if it happened a few days later during the Dew Tour.

When you have sensors such as "rate of rise" limit switches that are often seen in motor control centers wind chill can have a huge effect in making or breaking that contact. those contacts when not exercised can go bad espcially when you factor in age and exposure to weather conditions. What is bear mountain circa 1970? alluminum conductors are famous for failer under these conditions. All it takes one limit switch tripping with a lose conductor under the lug to destory the mother board. thats my diagnosis from 200 miles away.

Funny, out here in Jackson it regularly drops down to those temps with nary a lift issue.

AKA the theory that its cause of cold temps is bunk.

Windchill has no effect on the proprerties. It can only the rate at which the absolute air temperature is reached for inaminate objects. It was very cold and things do lose certain properties but wind chill as the cause is a farce.
