The US Forest Service has invited the public to comment on several Mount Snow projects:

  • Long John Widening with Fan Guns
  • High Speed Quad or Six Pack to Summit
  • High Speed Quad at Sunbrook

The invitation is here. The Project Map is here.

Comments due by May 28th.

Before anyone gets too excited, the EARLIEST the items listed, if approved, would happen is NEXT year (spring/summer/fall 2011)

outside Boston nowadays
yes
maybe
hell yea

the widening is just that one part of long john that does get cramped

I note that the forest service is stating that mount snow gets 250" of snow per year (see page 3 of the invitation, background) hehehheh

I am so happy reading the forest service plan. I have the impression this is really the best plan for Mount Snow, minimal environmental impact but a big improvement in the experience.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Sunbrook quad closed a couple of days a week this season alternativing with the Bear Trap lift?

Seems odd that they want to replace a 'part time' lift with a detachable.

These are going to be some great improvements. My wife and I call Long John "The Jersey Turnpike" on the weekends. The trail is always packed. Some widening will certainly help one of the most popular routes from the summit.

The new lifts will be a bonus as well. Coupled with the expanding snowmaking from the West Lake project. Sweet.

The new lifts will be a bonus as well.

On a selfish note, we used to love hitting Sunbrook before it became crowded. And on one of the rare sunny, non-windy days, I actually enjoyed the relaxing pace of the slow ride (and the opportunity for father/son discussions). And the Dipper trails were great during a couple of those big dumps we got this last winter.

The ride time referenced of 9 minutes seems a little short to me. Since they removed some of the chairs and increased the speed of the lift, I think the current fixed grip quad stopped more often due to loading problems. It's probably closer to 10 or 11 minutes. 4.5 minutes will be amazing.

I'm guessing the Mount Snow is looking for approval to replace this lift, but it wouldn't happen until after the West Lake project and they can have 100% snowmaking coverage on Sunbrook.

From the filing:

"If approved, the projects are expected to be implemented during summer 2010, or summer 2011, when soil conditions are favorable for all soil disturbing activities. Currently, the projects are planned for completion by October 2011."

I could see an inaugural celebration party during OctoberFest 2011 for the new 6-pack.

My guess is that once Sunbrook goes HSQ, it will run 7 days a week, and Beartrap may stay on alternate mid week schedule or may go back to 7 days a week.

Another thing to remember is that Mount Snow is also awaiting final approval of their West Lake project (fingers crossed - which will hopefully happen in the next few months) that when approved will allow them take the terrain serviced by the Sunbrook Quad from its current roughly 50% snowmaking coverage to 100%, and between the more reliable snow coverage and the allure of a HSQ, its very likely the the utilization of that terrain pod will go up.

If Mount Snow gets the approval for all these projects (the 2 new lifts, the trail widening, and West Lake) and if they can secure the financing for them (could be the bigger challenge :( ) the summer of 2011 will be mighty busy construction wise at Mount Snow!

I'm torn on that. I sometimes like the slow pace of that lift...mostly on week days. But other times, like on weekends and when Thanks Walt is skiing fast, I'd like a faster ride up.

I'm getting really selfish when I can picture myself making high speed laps on the Dipper's with dependable snow coverage below all the ridges/rollers on them :)

Lapping the dippers would be a blast with a good amount of snow. Those trails will be a lot different once they have snow making there.

Anyone else that spends a lot of time at Attitash bummed out knowing that Peak is planning on putting a hefty sum into Mt. Snow?

Shouldn't be that much of a surprise really...when Peak bought Mt. Snow, they came right out and said that Mt. Snow will be its' premier resort.

Do you think that they can and/or will cut any more trails over on Sunbrook once they have more water and a fast, reliable way up? Frankly, its cool over there to take a few cruisers....but I tend not to spend too much time over on Sunbrook..and it doesn't really have much to do with that lift.

I didn't make any mention of being surprised.

Wider trails can be good and bad. Bad because wider trails may allow more wind to blow good quality snow into the woods leaving extremely hard packed conditions. On the good side it may improve safety by reducing skier/rider density per acre.

One reason Long John needs to be widened is that when the Sundance chair isn't running, everybody who wants to ski Sun Bowl, Ridge or Uncle's has to go down one or the other green run to get to them.

Really? Maybe. Just wondering what your thoughts are? Just to be clear, I'm not critical, just curious.

I'd like to see an exit terminal at the highest point of the summit making it easy for everyone to disperse. It would skip the skate to the North Face. I think the Grand Summit Express is one of the oldest HSQs around. I kinda see this as a plan for semi-retirement for the old lift.

On side note, my 10-year old and 3-year old (yes, he's riding the lifts) want chair #50 on the new lifts painted gold. If you don't have kids, you probably wouldn't understand how cool it is to get chair #50.
