Date(s) Hiked:2/20/07
Trails(s) Hiked:Under Mountain Trail/A.T. North/Paradise Trail/
Total Distance:6.7
Difficulty:Moderate
Conditions:Under Mountain trail and A.T. North to summit is a super highway, A.T. North from summit steep trail broken by one other hiker, Paradise trail broken by one other hiker, 4-6 inches of crusty snow, some powder, some spots post holing.
Special Required Equipment:Sun Screen, swimming suit, beach tower, (was almost 50 degrees at the end of hike). Crampons or some type of traction for Decent on AT N down Bear Mt.
Trip Report: Under Mountain Trail was a super highway thanks to 4 hikers before me that I passed on the way up. They camped the night before,(if you guys remember that day it was -1 in this area) and had brought up supplies in a sled, so the trail was super packed. Bear booted to the summit. The AT north to Bear was the same. I can not say the same about the descent, down Bear on the AT. It was kink of sketchy in a few spots, and crampons came in handy. Paradise trail was really nice. At this point I was completely protected from the wind and it felt balmy. I would have been comfortable in shorts and short sleeves. You gotta love New England weather the day before it was -1 without wind the wind chill!
All in all I will go back and do this in the reverse direction some day, ascending Via Paradise and A.T. south.
