Well, I know this probably doesn't belong here, but I injured my knee somehow over the weekend.. So today I will not be heading up to Wildcat :( Rather I have an ace bandage around my knee and debating to head over to the Walk In Clinic to get it checked out... What remedies do you guys use when you get a banged up knee?

sorry to hear

go to the clinic. if it's anything serious, you'll want as much time as possible to treat and recover before next season.

R.I.C.E.

Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation.

And yes, better to find out sooner rather than later. Sorry to hear about your injury.

Doh. I just went to the ortho for a nagging problem in my knee from the dense pow day in late February. Went over the handle bars but the binding did not release. Have been skiing mostly pain free since but it is getting worse. Nothing serious, definitely not a MCL or ACL. Maybe meniscus issue but Doc thinks it is just a swollen fat pad below my knee and is prescribing Ibuprofen for the next four weeks. If that does not do the trick, it will be time for a MRI.

Might as well get it checked out. Definitely can't hurt if you are insured.

The R.I.C.E. advice is spot on. Unfortunately, typical family practice type docs are generally not great with knee issues. Someone who knows what they're doing can assess looseness and offer at least a reasonable guess regarding any ligament damage. XRays don't help much with soft tissue damage. MRIs are the only way to really know for sure what's going on. If you have insurance by all means go to the clinic. They'll likely give you the R.I.C.E. advice and tell you take ibuprofen for a couple of weeks to see how you respond. If you have something like a strained MCL you'll likely respond.

Hey Rivercoil, I am a med student and if you have had the pain for a while I would def get an MRI while going through with the anti-inflammatories(celebrex). I would bet you have a tear in your meniscus. My father tore his lateral meniscus on a powder day as well and needed to have a meniscectomy done on his right knee. If you have the insurance get the MRI so you know whats is up in the knee.

Appreciate the advice. There is no pain though. I jammed bumps for 6 hours at Killington a few weeks back and what eventually seems to happen is the knee feels "tired" is I guess the best way to put it. Climbed and skied Mount Washington a few weeks ago as well and no pain at all. It does have a "sore" feeling after a lot of use.

Any ways, Doc said it was either one of two things and I agreed that it would be great to try the anit-inflammatories for a while before going with the MRI.

Update... Just got home from a grueling 4+ hours at the hospital, and everything checked out. They did a few Ultrasounds and found nothing. Continue with R.I.C.E .... they will do some further tests if the swelling doesn't go down...

An ultrasound to diagnose a knee injury? That's not what I would have expected. I thought the usual thing was an x-ray and twisting your leg to check that the various ligaments are intact, or in more serious cases doing an MRI. Did you see an orthopedist? Usually if there's swelling I think it means you tore something.

IBUPROFEN (aka Vitamin I) is great stuff. Warning always take IBUPROFEN on a full stomach and in moderation. By moderation I mean don't live on this stuff. My wife had been taking way too much IBUPROFEN and ended up with a bleeding stomach ulcer, lost 3 units of blood, and spent 3 days in the ICU. Not good. The bad part is now she can not take any IBUPROFEN.

Ultrasound is being used more and more for diagnosis these days. It's actually a pretty cool use of it. Has to be better than an x-ray, which is useless for ligament injuries. MRI would be the best, probably, in diagnosing but isn't cheap so if you don't need one, don't push for it.

Take it easy and I hope it works out okay for you.
