What is the worst job a skier could have?

The biggest problem with being limited to weekends is that you can't follow the weather...crowds can be annoying but manageable.

Oh yes, that. I've spent many weekends at home looking at the walls because it rained and then froze, after snowing a foot on Tuesday.

Any job at a ski areas. Seriously. Could you stand bumping chairs or teaching a lesson on a groomer with newbs while the area is getting pounded with fresh powder? I'd consider patrol or an ambassador position when I'm much older and more into skiing for the social scene than being a hard core ski as much as I can type. But I couldn't live with watching others rip the pow while I worked. I can hardly stand working away from the mountain on a powder day!

How do you manage that? I'd think you would have to work when the ski area is open...

I would imagine your slow times during the week would allow for some ski time if you're right on the hill.

Well the resort I work at has night skiing. So during the week I get off at 4, and can ski till 10 if I wish. Also on slow days I work with people that can help out customers, and we will take turns on hitting the slopes. I never ski with my phone on my free time, but have it wired into my helmet when working, so I can be called back into the shop if problems pop up.

I spend pretty much every day off traveling to other resorts as well. I race in 2 local race leagues every week. Last 3 years I have gotten to ski 80+ days while working a 60+ hr. minimum a week job. Holiday weeks are way more hours.

I consider my job (airline pilot) pretty good for skiing, lots of weekdays off and some weekends too (to take my son skiing). However last year I got stuck twice in flat cities for days due to Newark airport being closed when Jersey and the whole northeast got dumped on. So it can suck too. Now if I could only get a SLC layover. I do have a long Burlington layover in January.

Or a Hawaiian Tropics model. Because then you'd be in the tropics. :dontknow:
I would have to disagree on this. Even the most hardened ski bum would not pass up a chance to ride the bus with Hawaiian Tropic models. There's a reason the movie Dumb and Dumber ends with Lloyd and Harry turning down a ride on that bus with all those models. It's not only dumb, it's grounds for turning in a man-card. Besides, you can ski in Hawaii.
I will add pro football player to the list. As stated here a couple of weeks back, in Drew Bledsoe contract he was forbidden to ski at all:eek:
After Jim Lonborg breaking a leg at Heavenly and Vlade Divac twisting his knee learning to board, I'd say baseball and basketball athletes have that written in their contracts too.
Teacher in a town an hr away from any mountain?

Summer off == water skiing
Working in education has its benefits - weekends off to ski, every holiday in winter is not a work day and you get a whole week during spring break/school vacation week. If you can swing a trip or two chaperoning a ski trip, then you can ski for free too. Don't forget that most teachers get very generous vacation and sick days.

yeah being a lifty would be torture IMO. I would easily take a night janitor job and clean shitters over being a lifty. Those guys have a great schedule.

I worked as a lifty in CO. I typically skied a full solid hour before the lifts opened, 1-2 hours mid day, and few runs at the end of the day. The key was to work upper mtn, expert terrain lifts. Working base area HSQs sucked!

Never done it and dont intend too, but I was always under the impression that a lot of lifties did it because it allowed them to ski/ride. One hour on, one hour off kinda schedule.

Nope, maybe 1 hour off for lunch. Even then lunch was often done in the lift shack, which at the end of the day made for a fun departure. The lunch trays they supplied made for fun sledding down the hill....dangerous as well.

Not really. Because their career is relatively short. They've got a lot of years to ski after they retire.

I used to have a friend who's an astronaut. Once you're selected for a mission, then you're not suppose to do anything to injure yourself. Skiing is a big no no. It's never written down as such. But if you ski and got injured, end up missing your mission, it creates an impression in the mind of people who will do the selection for future missions. Not skiing for a whole season may suck. But not getting to fly into outer space for the rest of your astronaut career sucks even more!

If your a skier, worst job without a doubt is to be the GM. Ask JD at Cannon how many days he gets to really ski.

Running a ski shop that is not at a ski area. I run one at a resort, and get out lots, but the guys who run our other shops ski very rarely.

This! I worked at a ski shop during my Christmas breaks in college. I didn't do a whole lot of skiing. I talked about it all day....but didn't get out much. Great experience though.

Not sure it's the worst, but my wife is a teacher, and it's pretty bad for skiing. Only available on weekends and peak holidays. Very little flexibility beyond that, and absolutely no piggybacking vacation days with holidays.

nope

F&B manager at a ski resort, done it twice at different resorts and both winters included the least amount of skiing I've done in a season in my life. 90+ hour a week commitment from 12/1 to 4/1 with about 5 days off total. I basically skied for half a day every other week.

The GMs at both resorts skied very little, but they at least went home for the day at 6-7 o'clock. An F&B manager at a resort is going to be there from 7 in the morning until 10 at night pretty much 6 days a week and usually end up being there for at least a few hours on their scheduled day off.

May be tight in the winter but its a darn good gig for summer activities or heading down to Portillo to ski:flame:
