its bad - watch this news video

I was at tahoe last year and conditions were excellent... but right now, squaw only has almost no snow and something like 5% of its terrain open.

today, we finally pulled the trigger and cancelled the whole thing :( We're going to have to suck up the flight change fees but its just not worth going through with the full trip if conditions at tahoe are worse than the northeast...

sad. I read a news report that ticket sales there are down 75% this year. I feel bad for the company & employees as well...just unlucky circumstances.

That must be disappointing. After such a promising start, who would have thought the season would take a nose dive?

We are in the same boat - the gf and I are planning on heading out the 25th. We are also watching the weather closely and will probably postpone it if the snow quality does not get better fast. Thankfully, with Southwest we don't have to pay change fees, but I've worked hard to secure really cheap flights on southwest, and if I rebook for later flights I'll probably have to pay a lot more for the flights....

I am here and it is tough. just a big pile of rocks really. Heavenly/Northstar are skiing ok for manmade and the weather has been sunny and spring like. There is a lot of doom and gloom floating around, businesses are suffering greatly, people are cancelling and I don't blame them one bit.

Four more weeks with no snow in the forecast and I'm packing my shit up and spending the second half of winter where there is snow.

With that said I skied over 40k vertical today and had tons of fun.

Yeah, my first ski trip out west is scheduled for 21-Jan. (Steamboat). Got a great club rate so going regardless. Make the best of it, maybe bring my flyrod too if it really $#%^&# to bed.

Local ski club leaves Friday

Several of my ski buddies are heading to Heavenly on Friday with our local ski club. I know they're bummed out by the conditions. I just hope it turns around for the ski resorts/areas soon.

Sorry to hear that, but good move. If you haven't seen it yet, watch the CNBC clip of Bill Stenger and Andy Wirth (of Squaw). Wirth really sounded dumb...saying that things were great considering that Squaw has two trails open  I feel bad for the hourly lifties and employees who aren't working.

I've got a Mammoth trip booked for February 4th. Trying to decide whether to pay to push it out another 4 weeks or keep it and look for alternate activities to do while I'm there. I haven't purchases the lift tickets yet so at this point I could go either way. I'd pay the change fees in a heartbeat if I knew they would guarantee some deep off piste skiing, but deep natural snow is never a given. Probably need a minimum of 200" to open up the good terrain so that's what, 50"/week for the next 4 weeks?. Is there an optimist in the house?

^^^^^^ How long can you wait. I would wait till the latest date possible then switch it. Then again March will surely have a deeper base.

I'm still not giving up on winter yet, there does look to be a big pattern shift coming up at the end of next week. This would be a positive thing for so many areas of the country that are struggling. Until then I will quietly ski open till close every day.

Just wondering...are there any ski areas in the US that are doing "well"?

The short answer is "no". If you want to dig deeper into the percentage of trails open, percentage of acreage open or however you rate the amount of open ski-able terrain you could say some are doing better than others. Snow preservation through resurfacing with snow making and grooming might be another way to pick which areas are the best to visit. Bottom line, no place is doing "well".

A colleague was at Winter Park for a week over Xmas. She said skiing was "not so great" with disappointment in her voice.

Bill
Can you get any more details from her on the conditions? I'm scheduled to fly out there for the weekend of the 14th/15th and am thinking about postponing my trip if its really not very good. Its just too much effort, time, and money to go lap bigger hardpacked groomers.

Any more info on Winter Park conditions would be great.

You can always invite me over, snoseek. Remember the magic I worked in Colorado in 2009? Seems the magic also worked in Whistler last week. ;)

Yep you need to get your ass out here, like a lucky rabbits foot. Beers in the fridge. I even got me one of them fancy hot tubs!

This. Looks like you've been reading (or maybe seeing if you know meterology) the same things I have. Bastardi has been tweeting this and there are others who feel this way as well. This pattern has been with us for a long time and that IMO raises the chances of it changing sooner rather then later. 2006/2007 replay? That was an a great spring IIRC. It would make you forget about Dec 2011 quickly. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
