    Alta question

Different way of measuring snowfall The resorts out west have a different way of measuring snow totals/base depths than we do back east. When a resort out west reports a 59" base, that is the settled snow depth, NOT the depth of the snowpack on groomed trails. Plus, it is usually measure in a...

    Heading north...Jay OB conditions?

Thanks for all the advice. I'll probably stick to the more open lines and take it easy out there. Probably make a hike out into the west bowl as the northwest winds are predicted to pick up dropping all that blown snow into the trees.

    Heading north...Jay OB conditions?

Heading up north to Jay this weekend and it looks like they have gotten a few decent storms to help raise the trail count. Looking to ski a couple runs out in the west bowl as well as the dip. Was hoping to hit big jay, but was wondering about the conditions. Anyone been out there recently...

    Utah Advice

What's your skill level? What do you two like to ski? They are very different resorts. BCC/LCC resorts are much more dependable when it comes to snow both quality and quantity. They are having a down year snowfall wise so it might be in your best interest to book on of the cottonwood canyon...

    Jay!?!?!?

It actually looks like canyon land or deliverance judging by the narrow ski line shooting up the hill behind the skier. I could be wrong though :)

    Slab Avalanches at Jay

Perhaps "the slide" at whiteface? But take a look at the year jay has gotten. A very nice early season into dec/jan, then an enormous thaw/freeze the entire month of jan, then they get some snow late jan and early this week they report almost 2 feet. Anything ungroomed over 30-35degrees will...

    Jay Peak Grooming

Maybe you haven't hit the jet (or anything on stateside), upper can am, exhibition, JFK, lift line, power line, etc... Probably one of the best mountains around for sustained pitch, of course with some runout at the bottom. How about staircase or everglade for sustained pitch?

    Jay Peak Advice

Wind is a big issue, even though they have been getting snow pretty consistently over the past few days, and they are expecting more this week through Christmas. :D Lift closures are a big hassle, as well as wind scorn trails (unless you know how to avoid these area)... You are also passing a...

    Trail Poaching

Re: The trails closed for a reason They are totally different. The trails that are closed after the mountain has shut down are because the LIFTS are not running, hence the ski area is closed. The trails that are closed during the ski season when the lifts are running are usually closed for...

    Jay is almost 100%

Jay got 14-16" all snow from this last storm and it's still snowing on and off up there. They are reporting 76+ trails that will be open, so probably close to 100%, with the face chutes, tuck chutes, and maybe green beret closed. I'm desperately trying to make it up there for a day or two...

    Coldest Lift in the East

How about the old spruce peak double at Stowe, but the freezer at Jay is probably the worst in the east, if not the worst in the US.
