Great marketing but completely unsustainable.

Its basically guaranteeing the eventual coop's failure, as the customer base is going to expect a product the Coop stands no chance in being able to provide.

Frankly, that is what Wildcat is dealing with now and is Black's ghost of christmas future. They pushed a ski season length they couldn't afford for a long time, to the detriment of the facilities, and now face a 1 2 punch of failing infrastructure and pissed off customers expecting a six month ski season. On top of that, Wildcat couldn't make it work and Black has worse sun exposure and elevation challenges.
Maybe you're right about the length of season being unsustainable but whatever the fuck they're doing now certainly isn't either.

The largest hurdle Black will face besides a sustainable capital flow is getting and retaining quality staff especially in the mountain ops side. This year it worked because a lot of favors were pulled and blood sweat and tears were put in. That is not sustainable because these people (like yours truly) have other jobs.

It’s hard to say if Wildcat “couldn’t afford” a long season and “couldn’t make it work” when they have been a neglected part of much larger conglomerates under Peak and now Vail. If they sold to a local group that was laser-focused on just Wildcat maybe things would be different. They have an ideal setup where they only have to spin one chair in the spring.

I agree.

Peak put a ton of money into new pipe, guns and pumps at Wildcat. They also had a shared GM with Attitash (Heon) but he knew what he was doing and had middle management who also knew what they were doing. They obviously were committed to a good season length and making a decent amount of snow.

Wildcat was bought by a parent company who owns 300 other mountains within a couple hundred miles. Vail wants people to go somewhere else early and late season. They aren't interested in spending capital there. They lost all of their talent. It's a recipe for disaster that would not be the case if someone else owned the property. Not really a comparison to Black other than being a neighbor.

The Cat knew all along that it would be an early closing. They barely had enough staff to run the place in Jan, then the shit happened, and staff was shared w/ Attitash which was just a ClusterFuck. You can't run a ski resort with out Lift Ops and Lift Maintenance ON SCENE

Kudos to Black for it's stellar efforts !!

Does Wildcats NFS permit last forever or will it be coming up for renewal? If it is people in the valley and beyond should voice their concerns over Vail's poor management.

That has already been done. Several times...
The whole MWV knows what a disaster Vail has been.

Those things crank. The only real downside is you're stuck with the nozzles that are installed.

That was the last big push in January I think it was like a 60 hour run in good conditions.

The way the forecast looks next week, this week will not be the end of their snowmaking window.

The cold forecast with lots of cool precip days is also good news for Killington trying to keep the Canyon runout going strong into May.
