A "cool" Labor Day weekend here in the east which included the smell of burning wood (from fire pits). That smell always reminds me that ski season is on the way.

It's one more season of an eastern and western split as we try to figure out when and how to actually retire. It's not as easy as one would think.

Couple of trips out to Granby, (Front Range skiing) one extended stay in March/April that will include a week in Aspen.

Eastern planning includes an attempt to ski the original 5 Ski 93 areas + the condition chasing up in Vermont/ New Hampshire on my Ikon and Indy Passes. Even got some Local Pocono areas on those passes and possible Berkshire day trips as well.

Got a new ski jacket last weekend. Also, a new piece of personal ski hardware, an ACL brace. Supposedly only for this year, I think I can deal with it.
What’d you go with for a jacket? I have to get one. Shopped around last season starting in February but I’ve become real picky and failed.

What are you looking for? Spyder had a 70% off sale running on some of their higher end jackets.

Its labor day and I'm still cycling and intend to keep rolling into ski season. I have had a very nice indoor wheelless smart trainer that I'm often too lazy to use. I'm committing to riding a few days a week through ski season to not only keep myself in shape, but to keep off the weight I've already lost in 2025.

I'm going to keep biking and hitting the weights.

Add some yoga and leg blasters around mid - end of october. Start with the Mini's

I'd like to be in top shape for my first winter season of retirement.

Holding full squats for 5 minutes a day on top of other mobility exercises. I’d like to see if fully mobile hips affect my skiing.

If all goes well I'll be skiing some indoor bump tomorrow. First time this year the scheduling has worked out for me.

What brands are you looking at?
I’m not super brand loyal. I’ve been wearing Flylow stuff for a few years but didn’t like last year’s jackets. I buy a lot of street clothes online but ski clothes are something I really prefer trying on before buying. Really limits my options.

The only change I make as far as working out is one leg day a week, I'll lower the weight and go for 20-25 reps to simulate the burn of skiing. Typically it's higher weights and sets of 6-10 to near failure.

I'm not 100% certain this strategy is any better than just doing the typical leg workout I do. However the longer sets and longer time feeling the burn seems more similar to what my legs feel skiing demanding terrain / conditions. The goal is less fatigue on the hill.

I should get started on tuning skis. No new equipment of note for anyone this season. Reloaded before and throughout last season.

This is how my PT recommended I train starting now until Nov for ski prep... lower weights until failure. For context, I'm returning from a Feb 2023 tib/fib spiral fracture. Last winter was a throwaway for me because the 23 screws holding that together came out Oct '24. So my right leg was only 5% as strong as my left. Lots of leg workouts leading up to today, but now the focus is preparing for the "burn". I despise the gym but if it gets me back out there, so be it.
