    2009 Season

The whole year's one big season to me, but I do admit the hiking will pick up now that ski season is over. I've already been up in the Whites taking photos of waterfalls, and hope to do a bunch of day or backpacking trips into places I haven't been before or in a long time, such as the Great...

    Favorite Backpacking Loops

Loops are tough - I tend to do more traverses or base camp in-and-outs. One of the best loops ever, though, is the Bigelows up in Maine. You can go up the AT and spend the night either at Horns Pond or up in the col between West and Avery peak, then come down the Fire Warden's trail back to a...

Powder Mountain article in the NY Times today

http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/travel/escapes/20powder.html?hp The article focuses on the non-chairlift skiing available there - the trio of snowcat, heli, and bus. It reads like a trip report. :)

another accident- Natasha Richardson in critical

I've read speculation that the fall may have been a symptom of such a problem, not the cause. Only the autopsy will tell for sure. Regardless of the real cause, regardless of famous star vs. ordinary person, it's very sad.

Where can I sleep in my car near Jay Peak?

Note that the Atlas Valley Lean-To (not a cabin) while a short walk up the Long Trail is officially not for overnight use, so if you try to use it, it's at your own risk for getting rousted out by a ranger in the middle of the night. Better off in your car.

    Ski area closing dates 2009

I'm living in denial, and keep saying to myself "This is the month Sugarloaf gets the most snowfall."

Cannon By Lonesome Lake & Kinsman Ridge trails

What, no NE Cannonball, too? :D I always enjoy climbing Cannon, the open views are so nice from the tower.

    Franconia Ridge Traverse - Feb 28, 2009

Thanks! We saw a little more than a dozen other people, but at least 6 never even made it to the Ridge: the first three got there too early before the winds started to let up, and the other three were definitely unprepared gear-wise for the conditions. There were a few others traversing the...

    Cannon 26Feb09

I fixed it for you. For future reference, go back to the first message in the post, edit it, click "go advanced" and then pick the camera icon there. I've gotta find someone to guide me over on the Mittersill side next time I'm at Cannon post-dump. Sweet pics!

    The curse of Ramen Pride

Good stuff for backpacking. Light as a feather. Easy to boil up as soup or just seasoned noodles. Throw in some hard cheese, or maybe one of those foil packs of tuna, and it's a fine meal. Just don't ever make me eat the stuff if I'm *not* on the trail. :D

Who is hitting Tuckermans this year

One thing about Tucks is that it doesn't happen that way - since you hike up what you're going to ski down, you can pretty much stop, gear up, and ski down from whatever point starts to exceed your comfort level. (assuming that spot is safe to stand on, of course)

Attitash and Sugarloaf both still do.

    Cannon 2/23

So, on the Notch side of the mountain we only did Upper Cannon and with the way that trail twists and turns, it came to pass that the right side of the trail was windblown scratch while the left side was deep drifts. On the other side, from the top of Cannonball Quad down Taft it was windblown...

Heavenly and Squaw Valley - Feb 8-10, 2009

I should add that one sweet moment for me was sitting up at the Terrace Bar, looking out over the top of Broken Arrow and across to the Lake, playing the grand piano ... in my ski boots. :)
