    Trailboss' Hiking/Mountain Trivia Round I

#9 Ktahdn and another spelling were before Katahdin. I never heard highest mountain, only greatest mountain. So saying Mount Katahdin is like saying Mount Greatest Mountain.

    hiking with bees

I don't know the answers to the original question, but my friend and I laugh about this story when we reminise (sp) about our backpacking trips... A few years ago, while backpacking the Freezeout/Wadleigh Brook trails, a friend of mine and I stumbled onto a nest - or stumbled into it. I don't...

    Why Solo Backpacking?

I love solo backpacking. Get to do my own thing on my own time, in my own way. Plus, not all who play outdoors have the same reasons for being out there...

    Your Favorite Skills? (help!)

I'm curious as to how you would explain "how to walk on uneven terrain safely" watch where you're going, maybe? LOL... I'll have to admit, I didn't know there were people who didn't know how to make a fire until I started backpacking with people from the Internet. I guess that would...

    Going up Katahdin in Sept.

I've soloed Katahdin many times, but I'm mainly a solo hiker anyway. Being in good shape makes any hike better - have fun!

    Bicycle Computers

all of my computer sensors have been mounted on the front wheel... I have a trainer, but I hate it - it's boring and I don't feel like I get a good workout. It was handy when I went to clipless pedals - I practised clipping out on it, and I use it if I need to hold the bike steady. Kind of an...

    Bicycle Computers

I haven't started riding yet this year due to a foot injury while on vacation last month...hoping to get out tonight. I've always used the simple bike computers, but when I finally bought a road bike last year, I got this thing called the "flight deck" It tells me many things, but in my trip...

    Hiking Clubs

I don't belong to any hiking clubs. I've joined the AMC once or twice and a club here in Maine once, but always let my membership run out....I never did anything with either group. I like to find my own way, do my own thing, make my own mistakes...plus the one meeting I went to for the Maine...

where to you buy your stuff

I loved that LLB discount, but I think I spent all of my paycheck there for the 1 year and 8 months I had the discount! :o I buy from campmor, sierra trading post, cabela's...places like EMS when there's sales, and LLB when I need a 100% guarantee, like with boots.

    How do you "dig" out?

I shovel. Lots of times I just put it in 4WD and go - this year I've shovelled less than ever as my Xterra goes through most anything. Once I didn't quite dare chance it as the bank the plow left was waist deep and 4 feet wide. I shoulda tried it first!

    what to eat

For suppers I usually bring some "base" items, then some "add mes." The base can be mashed potato, mac&cheese, tortellini, rice meals, etc. The add mes are dehydrated onions, veggies, cheese, foil pouch meats, whatever....all are made with minimum cooking time (5 minutes) or just add water...

Tragedy stops hiker from finishing Appalachian Trail

Pushing the envelope isn'tt always a bad thiing, but there is much more to this story...I admire his fortitude, but the helicopter that took him off Katahdin after a too long hike up (turn around times are a good thing), costs mucho $$$. Though the National Guard doesn't charge BSP cause they...
