    Finally! My first hike...

How about my favorite hike of all time: Howker Ridge to Mt. Madison? Hmmm, reminds me of my favorite quote about my favorite drink: "One martini is alright, two is too many, three is not enough." - James Thurber :D Steve

    Why Solo Backpacking?

I like solo backpacking, and will be doing a solo trip in the Pemi next week. I worry more about forgetting to bring essential gear when I'm alone. I always use a checklist when packing. Of course, in the Whites in summer, you're never truly alone. Steve

    Hiking Clubs

I'm a member of the NH chapter of the AMC and the RMC. The last time I participated in an organized hike was the NH chapter's annual Presidential Range Hike (PRH) in 2003. I plan to go again in 2006. Steve

    4K-itis

Passaconaway had well over a foot of snow most of the way up on Saturday, April 9. It will be a while before it's gone. BTW, it was a great hike, snowshoes all the way, with conditions becoming a little challenging on the descent as the snow softened. #36. Steve

    "Hut to Hut" hike( Presidentials)

Consider hooking up with an organized hike, rather than trying to plan your own. The NH chapter of the AMC runs a hike every July called, appropriately, the Presidential Range Hike, or PRH. http://www.amc-nh.org/ Steve

    Winter Hut Hikes

Perhaps an RMC facility would work for you. Here's their policy on dogs: "Dogs are allowed at RMC's facilities, but they should be under voice control at all times. RMC's caretaker may ask guests to leave an RMC facility, if their dog is threatening or otherwise disrupting other guests, or if a...

How Many NH 4000 Footers Have You Bagged?

At the time this thread was started, I had 3: Lafayette, Lincoln, and Washington. Last fall, I decided to do the list. I'm not sure why, just a game to play, I guess. At that time, I had 13. Now I have 30. I'll soon have 41 if Peak Week (9/3-9/11) goes as planned. I've been to some places that...

    Bears vs. Moose?

I saw a small bear run across Bear Notch Road right in front of my truck near the intersection with the Kanc just last Friday morning. He stopped and gave me a curious look, as kids will do, but I guess Mom was nearby calling, and he scooted off. Fast! Steve

    Bug report, anyone?

Last Friday, black flies were horrible on Sabbaday Brook Trail. Mosquitoes took over on Pine Bend Brook Trail. One of the buggiest days I've ever spent in the mountains. On Saturday, not bad in the morning on Howker Ridge, but black flies woke up in the afternoon on the way down. Not as bad as...

    Bug Repellent

I had a chance to try out Ultrathon last week in the Pemi and it worked pretty well. I was really getting swarmed by mosquitoes on a boggy section of the Franconia Brook Trail. I stopped and applied the Ultrathon and immediately got relief. Don't believe the 12 hour claim, though. Tip: wet your...
