    Saddleback

I always enjoy reading the discussions here at AlpineZone, and while I typically don’t have much to contribute to most of the threads, when I saw the touring conversation, I figured I could weigh in with some helpful perspective. I’ve skied/toured Mt. Washington numerous times, and as a...

Just how good was skiing in the NE this year?

Unfortunately the measurements for new snowfall at the co-op station on Mt. Mansfield aren’t made at the Mt. Mansfield Stake, which is in a sheltered location at ~3,700’ on the leeward side of the mountain where people ski. The daily snowpack depth is measured there, and is very reliable, but...

    Your 2012-2013 Ski Season Recap

I typically work up my ski and weather summaries over the summer, but I’ve now got those both completed, so I’m passing along some of the J&E Productions 2012-2013 Ski Season Summary here. I’ve got links to both the skiing and weather summaries below, which focus on the valley and mountain...

    Your 2012-2013 Ski Season Recap

I’m still putting together our full season recap, but we recently finished compiling our 2012-2013 Bolton Valley Photo Gallery, so I figured I’d pass that along for now since it’s at least a pictorial view of how the season went down at Bolton Valley. Snowfall was definitely well on the lean...

34" on the top of Whiteface

I visited Mt. Mansfield for turns on Sunday morning. I’ve added a couple of photos from my trip report below, and MadPatSki also has my story linked in his latest closing thread post mentioned above. I’d definitely say that Whiteface and the high peaks of the Adirondacks were the hot spot for...

    Bolton Valley land sale

I haven’t seen any updates in this thread since the summer, so I wanted to pass along the latest news on the preservation of the portion of Bolton Valley Nordic & backcountry land discussed in this thread. The entire $1.85 Million was raised as of March 20th, and the final purchase of the land...

    Stowe Pass??

That’s probably a decent way to look at it. As for the recent announcement about the no skinning, I didn’t get a chance to see it, but I suspect it’s like others have mentioned – that’s probably the official wording for legal purposes, but practically speaking it may not be enforced that way.

    Stowe Pass??

It’s good to bring this up once in a while because not everyone is aware of how these policies work. Even though the ski areas are on “public” land, the ski areas are leasing that land (or have some similar contract in place), and have control over it. People will sometimes use the analogy of...

    Stowe Pass??

In terms of Vermont snowfall, there’s certainly a notable jump as one crosses the Winooski/I-89/Route 2 corridor, with sub 300” snowfall averages in the mountains to the south (Central Greens), and 300”+ amounts in the mountains to the north (Northern Greens). But, among those northern resorts...

    Stowe Pass??

Huck, the best place to find reported snowfall for the Vermont ski areas on a storm-by-storm basis is to go to our Winter Weather Page: http://jandeproductions.com/winter-weather/ On that page, scroll down just a bit, and you’ll see a list of the past six seasons on the left – click on the...

    Your 2011 / 2012 Ski Season Recap

Your Rebel T2i would certainly take some great ski photos; Powderfreak uses a Rebel XS for his work at Stowe – I’m not sure what lens he uses (perhaps the 18-55 lens often found in the kit), but he’s always putting out great shots. Carrying around a DSLR all day on the slopes isn’t for everyone...

    Your 2011 / 2012 Ski Season Recap

Glad you liked the photos Nick; most of our shooting is done with a Canon EOS 30D, typically with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, but we also use other lenses on occasion such as the Canon EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. Since the 30D is a digital SLR, it provides very good performance in...

    Your 2011 / 2012 Ski Season Recap

Oh, we haven’t actually skied since Memorial Day Weekend at Mt. Washington, it’s just that I finally finished writing up the season summary and had time to post it a couple of weeks ago.

    Your 2011 / 2012 Ski Season Recap

I hadn’t noticed this 2011-2012 ski season recap thread until now, but since I just finished mine up a couple of weeks ago, I figured I’d pass it along. It’s focused on Northern Vermont, with sections on snowfall, tree skiing, snow quality, powder, and then a summary for each month from October...

    Best All Mountain Ski?

I was about to respond like deadheadskier and say that I agreed as well. At least in terms of what I’m used to skiing around here in Northern Vermont, six feet between trees seemed pretty narrow. But I kept thinking about it and realized that it actually depends on what people are talking...

    Bolton Valley land sale

The current efforts being made by the Vermont Land Trust to acquire the land could be one of the best arrangements – Bolton Valley could get the money they are seeking for the land, they would no longer have to pay taxes on that 1,000+ acres, and backcountry ski access to that terrain would be...

    Bolton Valley land sale

Thx Nick, hopefully you can experience Bolton at some point; bd definitely has it right in his comments below. I’d say Bolton slips under the radar to make it the least crowded 300”+ snowfall resort in Northern Vermont, and presumably east of the Rockies; it’s certainly high on snow quality and...

    Bolton Valley land sale

I haven’t heard anything about interruptions in the lift-serviced skiing at Bolton Valley (and I’ve been in contact with both the patrol director and the director of sales and marketing in the past few weeks), so as far as I know it’s business as usual at the resort. This thread is about some...

    Bolton Valley land sale

Congrats on moving to the area – based on the information in your sidebar it looks like you’re in Berlin, so you’re basically right on the line separating the Northern Greens from the Central Greens, and you’ll have quick access to the skiing in both areas. Even in the worst of seasons like...

    Bolton Valley land sale

Nice snowmonster, I hope you get out for a good tour. If we have a typical season, you should have a fairly large window in which to fit a backcountry ski outing with all the elevation and the snowfall that the area around Bolton Valley gets. The first of the backcountry skiing will usually...
