    What's your favorite surface lift?

The T-Bar at Breck that goes up about 900 vert and takes a 30 degree turn half way up has to the coolest surface lift in the States. Serves some great terrain. A close second is my Army time in Germany in the late 70's. The Zugspitz in Garmisch was served by a bunch of T-bars. The.Cable...

    When to start kids

Mrs I'll just tell you this... my daughter was remaniscing today about the fact that this will be her 20th ski season...she's 23! We started her in an all day ski school that took kids who were "potty trained". She was 3 yrs 9 mos. No magic carpet back then. The carpet was a long rug they...

Who actually has the Most Powerful Snowmaking System?

Mrs I vote for Seven Springs. It can be quite a spectacle. We went one year in the late 90's after a warm spell. They had every gun running for 18 hours. The temp went below 10. It was really loud so we got a non-slope side room. The next morning every trail and every slope was...

Best Night Skiing in the East?

Mrs Seven Springs, PA has great lighting even though the North Face is only half covered. Now that they have a HSQ on that side of the mountain maybe they will expand the lighting. This combined with a a GREAT snowmaking system makes for good skiing on a 750' vertical area.

    Safety Less Speed vs Helmets

Mrs Very interesting, lots of good info. Considering how many times I pervented a skier from running my daughter over when she was young back in the 90's, collisions and head injury seem to be the most important part of all this. I estimate I prevented a crash once/ 8 ski days from 1990-99...

Should ski patrollers be required to wear helmets???

Wow, some very interesting perspectives. Especially, the beginner observing the instructor in the helmet and being intimidated. It seems that first lesson w/out a helmet is OK. The education provided in the lesson would encourgae a helmet once the beginner becomes a novice and can venture...

    Where have you skied abroad?

I skiied quite a few times in Garmisch when I was in the Army from (79-82). As I remember there was lots of variety. The Zugspitz was lots of fun starting with the cable car ride. It was over 6000' from one tower to the next. Quite a view. Took the train from Augsburg, where I was based...

Should ski patrollers be required to wear helmets???

2 points..... Ski patrollers are some of the most important people on the hill and the most visible. I agree that I have never seen a patroller ski recklessly but while in uniform they are obligated to set a good example in today's ski/snowboard environment. So...a helmet should be part of the...

Should ski patrollers be required to wear helmets???

I skiied 40 years w/out and the last 4 with a helmet. Not skiing with a helmet would never be an option for me today. A helmet is always warmer in cold weather and a good helmet lets you remove liner parts to provide ventilation for warmer weather. That said, it seems really strange that ALL...

    Poles for Kids?

We started our daughter on skiis just before her 4th B-day. I did not give her poles until her skill level was such that she needed the poles and she was big enought that I did not have to lift her up to get on the chair. We usually ski about 10 days per year so she started with poles when she...

    Exiled Years

I have not missed a season since I started in 1963 w/ wood skis and bear-trap bindings. A couple of years I only went once or twice and currently average 8-12 times/year. Now that my daughter is almost out of college, I plan on pushing 20 days with a personal goal of 2 new areas/year. BTW...my...

    new lift gizmo

I skiied at Diamond Peak 2 years ago and....using a loading conveyor was easy and efficient. I rode all day and it NEVER stopped. It was fast, so I assume it was going at 500 fpm. As for an unloader, I wonder why it is needed if the runout off the lift is the good grade? Sounds like a very...

What's your maximum one-way day trip range?

I agree with GM. On snow time has to exceed total drive time. I have become a bit more careful since I'm usually tired for the drive home. Recently we have made trips that include one over night w/ night skiing and next day skiing during the week. We rarely ski on weekends anymore...

Cars with a Ski pass through/bag... not a split fold seat

The Audi's and VW's have the option. That combined with AWD makes these cars great in the snow. Our Passat w/ AWD was great last year. The big March snow was no problem. Here's why I always have my skiis inside the car. BTW I always bungee the skiis inside in case I have an accident since...

    The Market's impact on skiing

It seems to me, the areas that will end up being hurt by the current "financial crisis" are the ones that have to much debt on there current infrastructure. One poor year with continued snowmaking to rebuild melted snow bases could end it for some. On the other hand we are a couple of...
