According to their website, they were going to make snow last night. Can anyone confirm?

And Hunter DID NOT! Here we go again!!!

Dont start with saving money! They are just plain cheap. Of course RUSS does not help!

Here are the highs for that area over the next 10 days.

And on nearly half of those days, the low will not even reach 32 degrees.

I'd say Hunter is acting intelligently, and not emotionally running their business.

More likely.....they know they can't open on the current cold snap. They know they have enough snowmaking to open in less than two days from bare ground when they do get a real cold snap. The others do not have the luxury of having such an incredible amount of snowmaking, so they need to blow snow at every opportunity to have a shot at opening next time.

A lot of Monday morning quarterbacking here. Note that weather forecasts do not accurately predict temps at the higher elevations of the ski areas. Right now at 10:30am in Woodstock its 38 degrees and Belleayre temp is 27 degrees.

Also note that Hunter's snowmaking fire power means they don't have to start making snow early. Hunter can blast snow on many many trails at the same time and actually create their own weather system Belleayre's snowmaking is slow and persistent and can only make snow on a few trails at a time. Belleayre also has higher elevation mid mountain lift access. Belleayre often makes snow on an upper mountain on a small section of the Onteora trail, which is serviced by upper mountain LIFT 7 chair lift. Hunter on the other hand blows snow on almost the entire mountain when they start making snow. Big difference in equipment and strategies. If Hunter guesses wrong and starts too early they loose a lot of money. If Belleayre starts too early they only loose a small amount of snow. Very different strategies for very different mountains and snow making equipment.

Will they account for the washout that will inevitably occur over the weekend?

Why should Belleayre care? It isn't their money that will melt away.

Maybe you snomaking experts should tell Killington, Mount Snow, Sugarbush, Gore, Whiteface, Windham and who knows who else is attempting to build some base to be open the Friday after Thanksgiving to stop wasting their money also.

Last I checked, it has been pretty cold at Killington. They are also a Private Company. We are actually skiing on K's "base". No attempt. Actual skiing. With skis on. Check it out.

I think that same holds true for Mt Snow, Bush, Okemo, etc that are currently making snow. Private companies.

I don't care if people think Belleayre is wasting money. If they're open I'll be there 11/28 or 11/29 lapping that one trail and spending my money.

Give me a break. You obviously have never read any of the accountability reports on Belleayre.

How did that work out? Will there be an "accountability report" for the wasted water and energy?

There wasn't an inevitable washout. When they made the snow it was forecast to get cold maybe around Tuesday of that week. There was still snow there as of a couple of days ago so after the weekend of the 19th and 20th there must have been a lot more snow left. Based on the forecast at the time Belleayre was starting to make a base to try to get open for Thanksgiving weekend. If the forecast was correct then they would have had a base left to help them be open on the 25th.
