Date(s) Skied: 1/6/13 night

Resort or Ski Area: Massanutten VA

Conditions: Groomed, temps in 30s

Trip Report: First time skiing in the Mid-Atlantic. My daughter is a freshman at James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA - 12 miles away. Drove her down on Sunday morning for the start of second semester, got down in mid-afternoon after 7 hour drive from CT. After getting her settled back in her dorm, took a quick nap at the hotel and went back to pick her up for the short drive to Massanutten for their night skiing session. Massanutten is a 4 season resort and has a small ski area as part of the amenities. Trail map says vertical is 1000 feet, with 16 trails, tonight 9 of them were open. Like many southern areas, they have had a tough time making snow in this early season, but had done a respectable job getting some terrain open. There was even a bit of natural snow in the woods.

Night session runs from 4-9PM and the tix were $34. Nice amenities in the base area and the lodge includes a restaurant and bar where we watched the start of the Redskins playoff game on a huge screen in the bar as we booted up. The local Redskins fans were happy at this point as RG3 was still somewhat healthy and led them to a 14-0 advantage. Went out to the hill to find the beginner area looking up to the left from the base and the main mountain to the right. Took one HSQ up to mid mountain, where you had a choice of two other chairs to take you to the summit areas. Conditions were a combination of wetter snow in the lower elevations and some surprisingly drier snow at the upper elevations. Temps in the valley had been in the low 40's during the day, and were now in the 30's and settling back towards freezing. The upper elevations at Massanutten have a bit of pitch to them and provided some challenge and fun. The lower part of the mountain flattens a bit on the run out to the base lodge. Did not take any pictures due to less visibility at night, but the area is scenic and you get a nice view looking back over the valley. THe mountains in this part of VA are impressive with some 3000-4000 foot peaks. I believe the base of the ski area is around 2000 feet with a summit elevation around 3000 feet. All in all a nice way to start the second semester for my daughter. If you find yourself in the mountains of Northwest VA, Massanutten provides a good few hours of skiing fun. Alas the local Redskin fans faces had turned quite glum when we returned to the lodge to pack up. RG3 had been hurt and the Seahawks came back to win 24-14.

Sorry, no pics, lighting and visibility wasn't great. On the trip, also hit Ski Whitetail the next day, will post a trip report with pics from that one a little later today.

Nice report, thanks for sharing! Met a number of fellow instructors from Massanutten a few years back at a PSIA clinic - nice folks and good skiers. Always wondered how it ski'd there. Thanks again!
