Avy gear isn't always required. Depends on the conditions that day.
The only time I was there, they never opened them up, but I saw Ski Patrol doing multiple laps in there. It was kind of frustrating.

They're doing God's work, checking the conditions, and making sure that dangerous east coast avalanches akin to the high Austrian Alps do not occur to unsuspecting patrons. This is hard work, and they're not enjoying it at all, I'm sure.
