Here are the highs for that area over the next 10 days.

    38
    45
    52
    42

And on nearly half of those days, the low will not even reach 32 degrees.

I'd say Hunter is acting intelligently, and not emotionally running their business.

Monday: A chance of rain after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday Night: A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

More likely.....they know they can't open on the current cold snap. They know they have enough snowmaking to open in less than two days from bare ground when they do get a real cold snap. The others do not have the luxury of having such an incredible amount of snowmaking, so they need to blow snow at every opportunity to have a shot at opening next time.

A lot of Monday morning quarterbacking here. Note that weather forecasts do not accurately predict temps at the higher elevations of the ski areas. Right now at 10:30am in Woodstock its 38 degrees and Belleayre temp is 27 degrees.

Also note that Hunter's snowmaking fire power means they don't have to start making snow early. Hunter can blast snow on many many trails at the same time and actually create their own weather system Belleayre's snowmaking is slow and persistent and can only make snow on a few trails at a time. Belleayre also has higher elevation mid mountain lift access. Belleayre often makes snow on an upper mountain on a small section of the Onteora trail, which is serviced by upper mountain LIFT 7 chair lift. Hunter on the other hand blows snow on almost the entire mountain when they start making snow. Big difference in equipment and strategies. If Hunter guesses wrong and starts too early they loose a lot of money. If Belleayre starts too early they only loose a small amount of snow. Very different strategies for very different mountains and snow making equipment.

Does it really matter if it's not your money and you're accountable to no one?
I lift things up and put them down.

Give me a break. You obviously have never read any of the accountability reports on Belleayre.
