Last nite we were without power for 8 hrs about 13,000 customers hit . To this minute we have ZERO idea why as no newspaper was printed and no regional blogs or newsites are carrying the story .

It was in the mid twenties BUT our Gas fireplace carried the house at a toasty 70 degrees even without the blower . This unit carried us thru the MAJOR ICE STORM catastrophe in 1998 when some friends were without power for 2 weeks . We had beaucoup oil lamps going last nite and had a wind up off the grid radio going so it wasn't bad .

My mom said that she had power but farther down river they were without it. A squirrel supposedly ate through a wire. ???? Fried squirrel.

That concern is always in the back of my head for the place in VT. I need to get one of those "freeze alarms" that calls you when the power goes out. If it hits the fan, I drive north and fire up the Jotul until things get back to normal.

Its not ideal, but if you have the where-withall to make due, you can actually enjoy disconnecting, eh?

The last time we had a power outage for a loooooooong time(almost 24 hrs) we made due for the first night and went to the movies the second night. By the time we got home from the movies, we had power.

This is why I'll never be without my woodstove and plenty of well seasoned cord wood.

Last night it was 83 degrees in my kitchen where I was reading a thick novel in shorts and a t shirt. Sticking to the vinyl lounge chair. Ain't life grand?

If that city had MY dog, there would be no squirrel to chew threw the wire.

I hear ya trekie -- damn i'm PO'ed at myself for NOT letting The Teefster Roam that nite :D

He once put a huge dead squirrel that he got one nite on the back porch entry way to show us that he earned his keep .

Note to self : Let the Big Boy out at nite stupid

Seriously, our house was infested with gofers and squirrels, IN THE HOUSE, all last summer and this summer. We had live traps set up all the time, catching as many as we could, but they just kept coming.
And that doesn't even touch on the raccoons we caught on the front porch.
Jester showed up two months ago and NADA! Not one critter!
Raccoons, gofers and squirrels all gone.
We have caught three mice in the past few weeks with the cold weather turn and sending mice into the house, but as soon as he saw one mouse, he went on the hunt. This could be a very good thing!

Had the same "problem" Saturday night. I had to let the fire die down a bit; it was getting really hot. It was much cooler last night for dinner...I think we were at 78.

We're kicking around getting an insert for our unused fireplace in CT. I forgot how much I miss heating with wood...from scrounging to splitting, to stacking....it's fun stuff.

Amen to that. Nothing like burying a razor sharp 24" bar and chain of a 70cc saw into a big ol' trunk of hardwood.
