WATERVILLE VALLEY, NH- Katherine R. Chandler, a pioneer in adaptive sports and recreation and founder of AbilityPLUS, has been named Director of Development for AbilityPLUS, to lead the organization's expanded development efforts throughout New England and New York.
"We're truly fortunate Kathy has agreed to continue her service to AbilityPLUS and bring her considerable talents, energy and dedication to our much needed development efforts," said AbilityPLUS Executive Director David Hauser in announcing Chandler's position. "The families and individuals we serve will benefit greatly from her continued efforts on behalf of AbilityPLUS."
Hauser noted that additional funding is needed in order for AbilityPLUS to meet the growing demand for programs offering athletic and recreational opportunities for people with physical and developmental disabilities. AbilityPLUS works with a diverse variety of individuals with disabilities, including the Wounded Warrior Project, and people with autism across the spectrum.
Chandler was one of the first Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) adaptive and alpine certified examiners in the United States and has devoted her adult life to teaching and examining other instructors in the newest trends in adaptive teaching and adaptive equipment. She founded AbilityPLUS in 1997. The organization currently teaches more than 2,000 alpine ski and snowboard lessons each winter. AbilityPLUS also offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, waterskiing, hiking, kayaking, cycling and golf programs.
Chandler created and facilitates the Eastern Race Group, which started the Diana Golden Level I race series for developing young skiers. The series has become a nationwide model for bringing new racers to team competition. She also has assisted Disabled Sports USA in running the Ski Spectacular in Colorado as well as numerous other adaptive leadership positions throughout the country.
AbilityPLUS offers access to athletic and recreational opportunities for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities to create freedom, promote independence, support inclusion and help those individuals and their families discover their full social, emotional and athletic potential.
