Greatful Dead was great. Phish shows even better. Pick up some of the video CD's of their shows. Unreal! I am so happy I let my husband ram them down my throat. Hooked line and sinker!

OK, I know skican and dmc are definitely AZ Deadheads/Phisheads, and I am one also. Well, a Deadhead, anyway. Never saw Phish and don't really know all that much about them. I have held off starting this thread, but decided since the forums have been so active recently, it might be a good time to do it.

So how about posting your favorite memories of 2 great bands - The Dead and Phish. Where was your first show? Any musical highlights (that you can remember)? Favorite song/album/player/time period/etc?

My 1st Dead show was 11/5/77 in Rochester NY, during my first semester freshman year at college. My sister, her husband and another friend showed up in their 1971 VW bug and picked up my buddy and me, and the 5 of us crammed into the car for a 4-hour trip across NY State. The show was "festival seating", which meant there were about 5000 hippies shoved up against the doors 3 hours before the show, and when the doors finally did open, it was a free-for-all to get inside without getting killed. The show was phenomenal. In 1977, the Dead were rockin' like almost no other time, and for me, 1977 and 1971-72 are their best periods. The Fall 1977 tour was loud, rough and every show was long. But - I screwed up and opted to go home that night instead of going to the show the NEXT night at Binghamton, which was truly historic. (And I had a ticket, a ride and a place to stay!)

Oh well.....if you want to hear any of those shows from 1977, check out www.nugs.net or http://www.archive.org/audio/etreel...ad&PHPSESSID=ea6422b517f39368de703a1d1cc7f2b5 which is a killer website with lots of free downloads of many of your favorite jam bands.

Saw the Dead about 15 more times, mainly between 1978-1982, then saw them at Foxboro, MA in 1989 and 1990. Have to say their last few years didn't do much for me. Lots of good downloads on those websites above......

This is a thread I can follow. I still tour some. Mostly on the Phil side. 100+ Dead shows . I Have Rat Dog tickets for a few up coming shows. 150 + post Jerry shows. This is my other passion. I saw 7 summer Dead shows looks like no tour this summer or so they say. Killington is doing the Sunshine Day Dream weekend this year mid March. I'll probably go again. This is at the same time as one of the early Dog shows.
DMC's band I understand plays alot of Dead.
Phish not my thing. glad others enjoy it. ChileMass looks like we have something to talk about. Hey come skiing with us thursday night at Nashoba.
I will be the guy in a tie Dye... well always in a tie dye.

Chilemass...You DIDN'T GO TO COVENTRY????

Kind of wish I had...it was only 20 min from my home up there! :) The locals made a killing selling ice on I-91 and helped pull a lot of people out of the mud.

Oh, man - I heard about that fiasco. No way. I am way past those days. My last Dead show (Foxboro 1990) was a mini-fiasco with about 75,000 people with tickets (me included) trying to get through the other 75,000 people without tickets. It was a nightmare. I can't imagine what Coventry must have been like......

Bob R - we can definitely share some stories on the chairlift Thursday.....!!

I was at the Foxborough shows, one way in one way out. I don't miss the benches. I was at Jones Beach with the Dead, when coventry was going on. I'm pretty sure they were the same weekend.. We did not get rained on. :D

Coventry was a great experience!!! We parked miles away and walked in.. We had a a couple cases of beer, a tent and our sleeping bags..
The music performance wasnt that great... But I didn't care... And it didnt rain the whole time.. Just before..
My will call ticket didnt register as being used... Received an autographed book from Phish a couple months ago...

PHISH - My first Phish show was at the Roseland in NYC in March 1992... I went to see John Popper from Blues Traveler - who I heard was going o be there... I'm a big Blues Traveler fan... I was so impressed with the music and the covers... They covered "Take the A Train" and "Good Times Bad Times" It was a great show... But I really didnt turn the corner on them yet..
In 1995 I went to check out Dave Mathews Band at Roseland - again cause I hear Popper was gonna be there.. And he was - but Trey was too - he played on Watchtower... And he blew me away... It was then I became a hardcore Phish fan...

Favorite show... Clifford Ball...

Grateful Dead - My first show was at the Nassau Colliseum in 1978(?)
Was amazing...
Favorite show ever is Hershey Park June 1985... Incredible show... Get the tape... Also enjoyed most of the Madison Square Garden show every fall... Especially the ones with Hornsby playing piano...

Foxboro and SPAC show we're always fun!!!

You guys should check out those websites I referenced above. www.nugs.net especially has very, very good, very clean streams and downloads of terrific shows by the Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese, etc etc. NugsRadio is on my home PC all the time.

And www.archive.org has practically every Dead show ever - 2777 shows available for download in many formats. Most shows have reviews from the site participants, so you'll know which are the best quality. It has literally hundreds of other bands, and so much other audio/visual stuff, I have not even scratched the surface of it.

Have fun -

I was at the 1st Msg Hornsby show. That Era was my favorite I saw . Got on in the bus in 85. Glad you stayed dry at Coventy. We were getting reports people were getting wet. It started raining at Jones beach as we got to our cars.

Wow - how ironic -

Was cruising www.archive.org and found out that Rochester 11/5/77 has just been released as Dick's Picks #34. I feel honored.....

This is the second show I was at that is now part of the DP series. I was also at New Haven 1978 which is half of DP 25.

Good to see there are still some of us out there. My first show was in 77. Saw a lot of shows but not as deadicated as Bob R. mostly N.E. but some mid west . Have to agree the late 70s early 80S were the best ,wild band wild crouds. Of course I guess you probably cant beat there 60s shows , born to late! Now my daughter wants to go see Alisia Kees ? 100 bucks a tix !!! I dont think so!

Its kind of strange but the last band I saw was Godsmack . It was a small place in Hartford just before they made it big. WOW. talk about energy. I left there with a few new gray hairs. Have a friend who says " If it dont hurt it aint rock and roll" seen some amazing things with him.

I still follow the core 4 a bit. I would prefer to see phil and Friends with Warren Haynes to any other band they can put together. (The Quintet.. Phil, Rob, Warren Jimmy and Jumping John Molo.). Non Dead bands few and far between, but Donna The Buffalo peaks my interest.
