I just went through cleaning out my gmail inbox, deleting useless emails and generally tidying up. I was doing a series of searches to find big classes of emails- things like newsletters and bills and such. I did one using "facebook" thinking it'd clear out a good handful.

2,242 messages dating back to late 2009. I went through to see which ones were worth keeping- largely chats or email chains where "facebook" got mentioned.

A search for "facebook" now returns 95 messages.

My conclusion: 96% of emails that mention "facebook" are garbage.

Sounds about right!

I get a daily email from my ISP with an archive of all the SPAM they've filtered using SpamAssassin on their open source Linux/Apache platform. I run the Mozilla Thunderbird email application on my Win7 laptop and have a 2nd layer of SPAM filtering there. I pretty much don't get SPAM.

I get maybe 2 or 3 spam messages a year that make it through gmail's built in spam filters. The rest of the crap I get (facebook messages included) is stuff that I've signed up for.
