It truly pains me to say this, but you might have a tough time finding lodging in the Mad River Valley this weekend. I've been turning away lots of people for Fri/Sat nights because of the racing. There have been plenty of other times this winter when I could have used the business, but that's the way it goes, I guess.

I've got a question, heading up to Mt.Snow tomorrow (no choice, was a preplanned type of thing) and they have 75/145 trails open. What's the deal with this? I looked at their report yesterday (the day before the storm) and they have close to 100 open including most of their glades, how does a mountain end up with 25 fewer open trails after an 8-10 (or whatever the amount was) snowfall?

I was there on the 9th and I didn't see any glades that could even remotely be considered opened, only small spots of snow in the woods. I doubt they had 100 trails open either, I think I saw somewhere that they had 74 open while we were there. This pic isn't too good but it was about the best cover I saw in the woods all day.

I went to Jay yesterday. 8" at the base when we got there and it puked all day long. Everything was good. The base is soft and punkey and holds an edge well, no dust on crust. We got first shot at the pump house and it was awsome! Had to down hike about 20' from the top but it was sweet from there down to the rock in green beret. We were going to go to Cannon yesterday but they only had about 3" @7:30 when we went by. I would say any ski area you can get to is the best this weekend. Mittersill with 24-30" on it? Theres going to be powdershots all day. One word, Tuckerbrook. How about the 2nd peak at Crotched for you southern types? Or sneeking up Temple? Ragged has some great tree lines full of 2-6' drops that aren't very long but rival anything in Northern Vt.

We will be skiing at Waterville Valley on Saturday and Sunday. Here is why I like WV. From 8:00am to 10:00am you have a “Mommy Window” where you can ski top to bottom without too much of a wait in the lift line. After 10:00am I stay on the top alternating between the Northside Chair and the Sunnyside Chair. We usually take a break around 11:00am and head into the Schwendi Hutte for some hot chocolate. We head back out as the families head into the lodges for lunch and can once again ski top to bottom without too much of a wait. By 1:00pm our legs are gone so we head back to the house for a nap before dinner. At 50 years of age, a nap comes in handy.
