Bizarre day at Sunday River

To the SR cheerleaders: You will not find a bigger supporter of this mountain than me. That said, my day went like this:

Beautiful day I woke up to Checked the snow report at SR. "Lift 1 is Down" the report said. Didn't say why, but it's been having frequent mechanical issues so I wasn't surprised. "No problem", I thought. I lose a few trails but I'm taking my GF, who has a Threedom Pass and doesn't ski the River, and show her why it's a great place.

I'm an idiot because I didn't expect an amazingly full parking lot at 9am. It's December 23rd but, for some reason, I didn't expect hundreds of fully grown adults to get the day off AND go skiing at SR. I'm expecting a mellow Tuesday with sun and NO FORCASTED WINDS. Again, I'm an idiot.

We get there, and the new fabulous Chondola is on "wind hold"?????? I'm standing outside the base lodge and detect zero sign of winds. The other lift from South Peak, a high speed quad, is loading 2 people at a time only, and then 3 only, because of a "mechanical weakness" on the lift. I don't know what the hell that means. It would be funny if I wasn't waiting in a a crappy long line on a Tuesday morning. This gets better.

So we get to the base of lift 6 and there's a sign there that says Aurora, Jordan, and Barker lifts are on wind hold. Again, it's just not windy, and just from stuff I've heard, I'm close to positive it's not winds that have downed the Barker lift. So ride the lift to North Peak, still no detectable winds. What the hell is going on? Meanwhile, there's a million people there clogging usually mellow trails, freaking my GF out.

So I separate from her for a bit to get another set of skis while she laps Dreamaker and we plan to meet at the North Peak lodge for a drink while SR fixes whatever is going on. When I get there, I find out there's no bartender, no drinks except for Bud and Bud Light that a cafeteria worker can pour for you, and a summit lodge full of people.

Let's sum it up:

Chondola down (who knows why)
Aurora lift down (bullshit wind hold)
Jordan lift down (more bullshit)
Barker lift down (who knows why)
The South Ridge quad can only take 3 people at a time???????
No bartender at North Peak lodge with tons of people
Parking lots full and trails were jammed

Weather: Sunny, tons of snow, windless.

SR: Just leave a flaming turd on my doorstep and save me some gas.

Sorry but as a SR patrller I can assure you that the wind was whipping at the summits. It also depends on the direction of the wind, not just the speed. A cross wind is more problematic than a wind that is blowing straigh tup the lift line. The Barker Quad has been down since last weekend due to a bolwn hydraulic seal. SR has been very honest on it's daily trail reports and has even disclosed the reason on it's own forum pae- something that most resorts NEVER do.

As soon as the upper level winds died down the lifts opened, and it was posted on all the message boards Aurora, Jordan, Spruce, White Cap, and Locke ALL had their summits open, and th Chondola was running too.

Sorry that your day was not exactly what you had hoped for, but SAFETY COMES FIRST. I rode those lifts during the 60mph gusts, and trust me your GF would not have been happy. We don't close lifts or trails for no apparent rason, and the lift mechanics are presently working to get #1 up and running asap.

Peace...

Incorrect. They claimed well over 100 trails on their website this morning. Did we have access to them? Not even close. They sucked today, plain and simple. Oh, yeah. Don't EVER not serve drinks at the NP lodge. Unless you don't like money.

You're taking my quote out of context. I was referring to the fact that everyday this week the Mountain Report has clearly stated that Lift #1 will not run today.

It's a technicality - The trails were open, but the lifts were closed due to wind. Just like when we don't run the Locke triple midweek, those trails are still open, and many folks do hike a bit to get some freshies in. Yesterday we had people hiking all the way up Spruce for first trax in 2-3 feet of powder on Amex and Downdraft.

That's some technicality. Friggin weak. Listen, I love that mountain, and I've possibly skied it more than you, but I hope management reads this and reconsiders their daily online reports AND bar staffing.

Edd, you should of gone to Loon with us today, all lifts running, moderate lines, only gondi was long, all sweet packed powder. Started at our private lodge, with 3 other people, did 29,000' (was with a couple guys with not to many days in).

Thats not a technicality at all, that is bullshit plain and simple. If the lifts are on hold then update the Trail Report to say 40% open, more terrain opening later in the day. I can hike your trails after the lifts stop turning for the season, that doesn't mean you get up in the morning and put 100% open on the snow report just because I'll put the effort in to hike up there. How is this any different?

And its not just SR that does that, Mount Snow did yesterdy too. 88% open on Sunday, "93%" open on Monday, yet I could only do about 20 trails because almost no lifts were running. Bullshit in my opinion.

Loon and Saddleback with all lifts running. Hmmmm..... Well that makes sense since only weak winds were forecasted. Makes you wonder...

As others have said, SR isn't the only resort to use the Trail Open / lift closed thing. I think it's bogus too, but that's a Mgmt decision, not a Patroller's.

Oh yeah - and I highly doubt you ski SR more than me... 60-75 days/year for the last 25 years (plus 20+ more at The Cat and The Loaf)

Turns out you're right about that. I ski all of those places. If we ever bump into each other I'll gladly buy you a beer.

Cheers ! I/we HATE wind holds too, and the "games" that all Mts. play w/ reporting trail #'s and snow totals, but as a patroller - I have to think of the safety of even the most inexperienced skiers/riders, not the diehards who will brave anything for some turns.

I worked for the Cat (along w/ SR) from 2000-2004, and they're less likely to make a wind hold call in 40-50mph gusts - Hell if they did, they'd loose 30+ days each year !

Love wildat -only 35 mins from Bethel !

Beware X-Mas day is going to be another potential wind hold day in northern NE
