Hopping into this thread hoping to learn more. I live across the street and was heart broken to receive the email today. This was a surprise to the neighbors I have talked to as well. They were mowing the trails and running the lifts this weekend. I had heard it was being marketed behind the scene but never confirmed the rumor. I know they had their problems with the initial uphill experiment but it seemed to be drawing folks since that drama died down.

I think mountain biking and some sort of sustainable power generation could help. Jackson gets its share of wind especially in that area & the old Shovel handle lift could take advantage of the southern sun with solar panels. Hopefully the horses stick around producing income during the summer months for the current ownership. That seems well booked although the rain this summer probably didnt help.

Have there been examples where the town has come through in a public/private partnership on any of these smaller mountains? I am all for a BlackCat hybrid!
YES - in the 90"s Mad River Glen was purchased by a locally formed Co Op

How many 100k memberships would it take to run it this season?

How many more for the basic upgrades?

How many more for the high end everything?

Black is a great little mountain. Not a $100k type of mountain. Not even a $10k kind of mountain. More of a $1k per family kind of mountain. Any hope of snatching it from the jaws of NELSAP lies in investors like the ones that recently bought Tenney or a small group operator like the Fairbank group that owns nearby cranmore (+ Bromley + Jiminy)

That is good to hear on Mad River. I will look into how it was organized. Thank you.

And yeah, it was a $1k per family for locals. Thats about what we paid for our family of 4. And affordable for when your non pass holder friends came to visit. It is a great little mountain. Especially on days where it was frigid in most other places nearby.

Agree. But there's a ton of new people with money in town these days so I'll hold on to a little hope.

Daughter's went horseback riding at black late summer. People were awesome, wife left several messages and we got a call back Monday night. They offered to take the girls on Tuesday. Did not realize they were closed Tuesday until after the girls got a great ride. Likely due to the 603 number.

Staffing is the largest problem in the valley. Staffing may be a problem everywhere but it is an entirely different level of problem in the MWV. There is a newly built MB unable to open due to staffing.

Other examples would include Whaleback, "Friends of the Mountain" (formerly Big Squaw, Maine), Black Mountain of Maine, and to a lesser extent Ascutney Outdoors. The latter, however, is running the shell of the former Ascutney Mountain Resort using a rope tow and a T-Bar.

MRG is quite a story. A group of skiers formed the coop and worked with Betsy Pratt to arrange for seller financing to help facilitate the transition. The Coop paid off this loan in ten years. She was very happy to turn over the reins to these folks, but it took some time and work to organize and operate it. It also is Mad River Glen, so it has a pretty devoted following. According to their site, shares are $2,000 each and they have a maximum offering of 3,000 shares. They've sold 2,130 of those shares. Shareholders are obligated to spend at least $200 each season on tickets, food, season passes, etc.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but when an owner or management ever says lack of staffing is a problem, what they really mean is “we can’t find enough morons to work for us for how little we want to pay”.

Example: Vail couldn’t find people to work Attitash or Wildcat for the old wages which were less than what Dunks in North Conway was paying. They raised wages and got more staff.

Thank you thetrailboss. I was reading through their site last night. They must be doing other things on the mountain right too as a lot of their non share holder season passes are sold out. It’s been 20 years since I skied MRG so I dont really remember how it compared to Black from a terrain perspective. I guess the first step would be to find out the current owners intentions.

Yep. I would fully expect "No Trespassing" signs, barbwire, and perhaps landmines to deter folks from skinning up that area.

It's understandable. Besides the "dispute" with the touring community, there are potential premises liability issues if someone got hurt. I imagine that they have limited or got rid of most of their insurance because of cost.

It is all sad.
So, you're telling me there's a chance?

Nice to see the owners are giving pre-purchased season pass money back. Good for the owners. Never skied there, always sad to see another small area go down. Best of luck to the owners...

The terrain and skiing experience is night and day between Black and MRG. MRG is much much bigger, longer runs and better snow (when they get it). The local community thet runs the place is all in on the mountain too. It really shines through when you go how much pride of ownership at MRG there is.

SPOT ON, this is true across the board, all employers. There is a labor shortage, but you are right in these troubled economic times cost is the key factor in hiring.

This is not a knock on Black Mountain. The city in the mountains leaves a boy without a dream.

Hey at the end of the day the family has a lot of land (assumption) and awesome memories and ran the place the way they wanted. Must have been a good ride.

I was in the Rochester MB and chatting it up with an older man bagging my groceries. He said they were bussing them down for training and the store was built and ready to go but they still needed more staff to open. That was almost 2 months ago I would guess....

co-op model works at mrg because they don’t make snow. very little pipe to install and maintain and very negotiable snowmaking budget.

Sounds like black needs to make a lot of snow with its aspect and elevation. Plus 2 lifts need to be replaced? And massive pipe improvements?

best bet Is to get some rich guy who doesn’t mind losing 15 million. Does Dave portnoy ski?

maybe the owners from pats peak can come in and consult. They seem to have the small mountain snowmaking game figured out.

Very sad to see this. When I told my kids about it last night one of them said "That's where the crazy guy was yelling at the lady, right?". Kinda sad that their biggest memory of a bluebird powder day is the owner yelling at a customer (and for no good reason). I could dig up the whole story with a search, but why bother at this point. Unfortunately I've been told that wasn't the exception but quite often the norm. Not surprised that they had staffing/customer issues. Hopefully the mountain will reopen someday, preferably with new ownership.
