I typically start with mine kinda loose and tighten them up as the day goes on. Though I'm trying to get better about not over-tightening them to the point where my feet go numb (yes I need a boot fitting bad). The two lower buckles start at the first notch and usually stay there, but sometimes I feel the need to tighten up the in-step buckle a bit. The top two start at two notches in and get moved up a notch or two by the end of the day.

Haven't had a lot of experience with the new boots yet, but I try to remember the notches where I put them the last time...I usually need to loosen up the micro-adjustments at first but I can crank them up a bit as the day goes on.

One thing that helps is that the boots are snug to begin with so if one of the buckles over the foot come loose it doesn't make that much of a difference.

With my new boots they latching has yet to be the same on any ski day. Generally it starts off loose and as I warm up and pack them down ( also as I ski harder lines in the day) I tighten them down until I feel like the boot and the foot are one.

Whatever is comfdortable unless I am skiing something hard... when racing I put them as tight as I can physically tighten them for the race run... great control.

Didn't Tomba used to stick his bare feet in snow before he raced - so his feet would contract and fit into tighter boots?

My boot settings are easy to remember -- it's the first latch for every buckle except the top most one, which is on the second latch. I don't obsess over the micro-adjust settings. If my feet feel a little loose, I'll mess with the micro-adjusts accordingly.

I used to crank everything down another buckle notch when I was racing or skiing something where I wanted "more control". I've come to realize that doing that pretty much eliminated what little ankle movement I have in ski boots, and I wound up with less control then I had with my "normal" buckle settings. i.e., with my boots too tight I lose the ability to balance through my ankles and make other fine adjustments with my feet.

Considering Tomba won 5 Olympic medals, if it works for him, then its cool I suppose... ouch that must ahve been cold!!! Any truth to that?

I'm not so sure about that, but here is what I do, which may be a contributing factor. I keep my boots cold, in the back of the truck. That way my feet don't sweat when I put them on. If they sweat, it's all over for me. I can warm em up just fine.

I'm now thinking that since they are cold when I put them on, they are not packing down very well at first, until I warm em up a bit. Maybe, I'll let em ride up in tha cab of the truck, behind the seat in the jumper seats, away from direct heat.

How long are your boots chilling for in the back of the truck like that? If my boots are cold then getting them on or off without warming them up with a hair dryer is nearly impossible.

The bottom two buckles on the second notch, although I don't worry about them too much, I've skied with them open and had no problem. My boots fit very well, so if the bottom two are open, my foot doesn't travel around. The top two, third notch all day. Find the top two to be most important, have them nice and snug, but not too tight.

I always start with mine pretty loose and then tighten them after a run or two. Minor adjustments here and there for the rest of the day. I also unbuckle at the bottom of every run.
