The rim is an innovative design that essentially features an I-beam design down the center. This structural shape is then machined into tabs that, once drilled, fit the barrels that hold the ends of the spokes. And while this bit of engineering makes for an attention-catching rim, it also means that the rim is stronger due to less drilling, which actually weakens the rim. Secondly, the absence of visible spoke holes means that you won't need rim tape. This makes for a clean and simple tubeless rim design. Crank Brothers' Cobalt 3 wheels feature its now-standard twin-spoke design. The nipples are extended so that truing is simple. And, this shorter spoke design adds a bit of lateral stiffness.
At the center of the Cobalt wheels is a set of custom Crank Brothers straight pull hubs. The front hub comes standard as a 15mm thru-axle and the rear as a 135x10mm quick-release.
The Crank Brothers Cobalt 3 Wheelset - 29in- 2013 is available in Black/blue. Please note: The rear hub is not convertible to a 142x12mm thru-axle system.
