I copied this from another forum, I thought the gang would find it interesting.

As much a Telerod doesn't want me to do this (You can't handle the truth!), here are the results of some trails mentioned in this post. I will spare you the pictures and just give you the numbers. As a frame of reference, I picked the steepest section I could find on each run, as long as it was over 500' in length. Note: these are in degrees, not percent.

Starr @ Stowe - 31.1 degrees
Castle Rock @ Sugarbush - 21.3 degrees
Whiteface Slides @ whiteface - 36.3 degrees
Denton Hill's triple diamond run - 27.7 degrees
Goat @ Stowe - 33.6 degrees
Robin's Run @ Smuggs - 29.8 degrees
Outer Limits @ Killington - 28.5 degrees
Devils Fiddle @ Killington - 25 degrees
Ripcord @ Mt. Snow - 27.4 degrees
Tuckermans (steepest I could find) - 45.3 degrees (damm!)
Dynamite @ Tremblant - 28 degrees
Black Hole @ Smuggs - 31.0 degrees
Ovation (lower section) @ Killington - 30.7 degrees
Rumble @ Sugarbush - 27.9 degrees

Ripcord seemed one heck of a lot steeper than 27 degrees when I took 30 minutes to get down it. On my 6th or 7th day of skiin in the previous 18 years. When it was covered in ice.

I know, I shouldn't have been on it at all, but I didn't know any better, and there wasn't any snow left on it to scrape off, anyway.

Anyway, those numbers seem small. Maybe it's the 500' length.

32 degrees... good number. 8)

Supposedly, Jericho at Jiminy gets in the 30-35 degree range. Do I believe it? Sort of. It does get very steep for about 50 vertical feet, but the rest is definitely more like 25. Wild Turkey feels steeper.

Smith Walton at Wa gets up to 28 degrees for a good 200 feet, levels out, then goes over another one that's 30 for another 75 vertical feet.

I think he was only measuring trails he was at personally...

Cause I could throw Lower K27 at Hunter in there too... Which is in the mid-30's too - but more like high 20s sustained...

Those measurements seem pretty right on for the stuff I ridden.. 45 at Tucks is steep.. But places at Tucks - like the skiers left entrance into of the Left Gully get close to 50 - even though friends swear 55...

nothing in the east seems quite as steep after being in tucks. the runs in tucks are consistantly steep throughout the run with the innitial pitches varying depending on the snow pack but exceeding 45 degrees in places. the draw back with pitches like that is you can't ski them in powder unless you have a death wish. though the pitch of tucks isn't the frightening part, which rather is the prospect of falling and not being able to stop yourself due to the pitch.

i think that is really the true measure of steep... the need to self arrest a slide or fall. very few new england trails fall into that catagory.

No doubt...
It baffles me to watch someone slip down the Chute at Tucks and not even try to self arrest... If not to slow yourself and be safe - then to save your run.. It's a shlep for most people to get above the headwall...
I seriously yelled at people "GET UP - GET UP"... On a board you got a couple chances to get up before your going way too fast and risk breaking a leg..

On skis - even less of a shot depending on how tight your binders are...

If I ever go out to really sick stuff - I'm riding with an ice axe... Either in hand or handy... Right now I carry it on the back of my pack..

A bit of a Vermont bias in the initial post but I believe White Nitro at Sugarloaf averages 29 degrees with the real steep part in the low 30s

Their website claims 57 degrees. Obviously this isn't sustained for the whole run. So how long is it actually 57 degrees, if at all?

Where is High Rigger, Ignitor or Upper Bubblecuffer in that mix?. My shaking legs and the urge to use the bathroom before decending those trails indicate that it must be steep

I was just reading about a Sugarloafer who measured some trail angles:

White Nitro 32 (average), with 36-38 degrees for a few turns just above the safety net.

Backside maximum steepness: 40-41.

That seems ridiculously generous to me. Nothing at Wachusett is very steep or challenging. The toughest part is dodging the masses of people.

No, no, you're the one that's mistaken...

...They're not "masses of people" they're "pylons."

Pylons, zombees, school children, joeys, rangers... They all suck and get in my way.

Hey, Sky... Remember when Dozer clocked into me at a good 25 mph? That was real neat.

Never been there but most likely not at all and if it does it is probably for 50 ft max. There isnt anything in New England that gets over 55 degrees, so i doubt there is a place in the mid atlantic that does

The average for the run is 32 degrees. But In places I dont doubt 50. Close to 60 is probably a lil much. Id say after the main drop off of upper shays about 100 feet past it, It would be 50-53 degrees for about 75 vertical feet. That scared the crap outta me. I came from beehind this massive mogul (Late march) and there was practically a cliff. Insane.

I prefer the term...Penguins. Standing and resting and looking about.

I've seen moms and dads all standing at the base of the beginner area looking like a rookery!!
