Sugarbush's own Doug Lewis has been selected for induction into the US National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A two-time Olympian, Doug was the first American male ever to medal in the downhill event of the World Championship. A frequent host on the Resort Sports Network, Doug is a tireless ambassador for the sport. Way to go, Doug!

That must have been at the NASTAR Nationals. I took that shot of Doug at the Nationals the year before. I missed the event this year for the first time in four years because of broken ribs and pneumonia. How'd you do?

If you ever get a chance to hear Doug give a presentation, jump on it. Our ski club had him speak a year ago and it was probably the best presentation we'd ever had.

Congratulations to Doug. Met him last December at a race camp he ran our daughter was in. Fantastic experience for her and he's great with the kids, very enthusiastic, and a great teacher. Daughter picked up several things from him which greatly improved her performance last season. Great guy!

Follow up

Just a follow-up. I heard from Doug. He viewed the posts folks put in this forum and is very appreciative of the nice comments. He also mentioned that Sugarbush is looking for a Race Coordinator for this season. If anyone is interested, email me and I can forward the position description.

I competed in the Vertical Challenge the year that Doug did it and set the still-standing record. He did 28 runs, narrowly beating Tiger Baird at the finish.

Between a young Dylan Crossman, Crankin' Craig Barnard, Tom Thumb, Parky, plus Tiger and Doug, it was an amazing seven hour ski show. Watching Doug non-stop straightline the right edge of Chute and Liftline, hucking the full drop of the Tower 10 cliffs, run after run after run of icy bumps and dodging other skiers, absolutely blew my mind.

I still quote him for what he said after the finish, "It was the hardest, and stupidest, thing I've ever done on skis." For a guy who has raced World Cup and Olympic downhill, that's saying something. By the way, for those of you who want to try to repeat his feat, even for one pace-setting run, he averaged 3 minutes per descent.

Congratulations Doug! You deserve it!

John

Doug is a great member of our team here at The Bush, and he offers some terrific race camps during the season. Check out his Speed camp in early Feburary!
