Any recommendations for decent software to do this? My computer came with a program called "Windows DVD Maker" installed so it seems I have a burner but no means to rip a DVD. I'd always assumed Windows Media could rip them since it rips CDs but I was wrong.

When I search online for software everything strikes me as shady for some reason; there's a shortage of reputable reviews and an excess of troubling sales pitches. This should be easier...

I've been using DVD Decrypter for years, a very old version and I've never seen it not be able to rip a DVD even new ones. Not sure if you can still get it, it was a free download. I use it to copy DVD's to my netbook for the road.

I've been using DVD Shrink. It bombs out on certain newer copy protection schemes. I rip DVDs to my hard drive for trips, too. Way easier than carrying them around.

I could be wrong but I think DVD Decrypter stopped updating so someone else picked it up and called it DVD Fab Decrypter.

I use Auto Gordian Knot which uses DVD Fab Decrypter for ripping, Dvd Shrink for removing the junk you don't want, and converts it to divx or xvid for a nice small file size.

The freeware is now called DVDFab HD Decrypter. I haven't bothered playing with it yet to see if it can rip my Disney / Pixar DVDs.

I just leave everything raw. Now that terabyte hard drives are so cheap, I just push them over USB to a $100 hard drive. When I'm traveling, I pull a few off a drive onto my notebook computer.
