Starting to plan our annual family trip to Smuggs (or somewhere else if i can get a better deal) all suggestions welcome

Dates: Jan 9-14 2009 (not locked into those dates, they are just SuperSaver dates at Smuggs)
2 Adults (full ski)
2 Kids (3 and 6, both will be in full day ski school)
Prefer walk to/slopeside 1 bedroom Condo with kitchen

Right now Smuggs is about $2500 for all. 5nite/5day lodging in above condo, 2 adult full day lift tix, 2 kids in all day ski school and use of other ammenities......

any other deals out there?? Sunday River, Canada? Smuggs is fantastic, we've always had a blast there, great terrain (Robins Run/Glades) just looking for other, possibly cheaper suggestions....

It seems like a great deal..it depends how much the Adults are into steep terrain..considering the high cost of childrens programs..the Smuggs deal seems good..but that time of the year..there's a good chance alot of the good terrain at Smugglers Notch won't be open or will be bony. Plus it's either the coldest time of the year or the January thaw..based on my experience it's a finicky time of the year weatherwise..For less expensive..you could stay slopeside at Bromley and have a better chance at milder weather. Smugglers is the ultimate family ski resort in the northeast but sitting on creaky slown lifts in cold weather with alot of runs closed is not the ultimate..

While I would be wary of early January like you are, I dont think you can do any worse...once that Lake Champlian lake-effect snow machine gets going in Dec should be OK.....usually at least a couple of inches 3-4 nights a week...factor in a couple of storms and should be good to go......

I dunno...or wait till March...

Sorry for the non-helpful post...

just in case you ever think about somethin' up NE..

Skiquattro...Can't beat Vermont, but if you ever get the urge:grin: to take a few+ days off and get away from the crowds. at Sugarloaf(Feb-Apr = best)...check out a few places in Stratton(fixedgrip16 will vouch for this choice) a very small town ~7mi past the Loaf's access road....really inexpensive...and with a few nice small pubs/restaurants around.
White Wolf Inn
Spillover Motel..but my favorite is a refurbished barn that's on town line of Eustis.

(*Last year...just had one centralized TV room..)

How can that be? It seems too narrow for a storm to fetch much water moving west to east plus most winters the lake is frozen over. I don't get it.

Powderfreak where you at???? He'll explain why the Northern Greens receive double as much snowfall as Whiteface better than anybody;..
