Freak ski injury last night

So i'm at Wachusett last night and i'm in a stopped position and my skis are pointing a tad down the fall line. Both inside edges are on the snow and my ski begins a backward slide and my legs begin to push out from me doing the splits while sliding backward (picture a slide on a 45 degree angle). Now being a guy I can only do the splits so wide until my left knee just buckles and I collapse to the ground in pain. This morning I can barely walk and bending the knee is painful. I am bumming out here as I have to see the Dr about this and it looks like my season may be ending early  my first real ski injury to put me out of commission in 20yrs of skiing and it didn't involve any speed or a dramatic crash.

Thanks DMC those words were exactly what my wife said to me before work this morning. "Think positive." I'll update with results from Dr. but I believe an MRI is in order before we determine if any damage occured.

Ihearya ctenidae. But being a ski instructor requires alot of picking up beginner skiers mainly kids and puts alot of stress on the knees. I'm hoping a week or two off the slopes and a prescription for a good knee brace for best case scenario. I don't even want to go into detail about worse case scenario (slice, slice, cut, cut) :(

I believe in Voo-doo meds. I put a magnet on my ankle every day after I ski. I have one on from going last night it helps. Best sorry about you injury.

Your gender is no excuse. I always do a series of Yoga stretches before DHskiing. When I skied regularly (at least three days a week DH) I would do a half hour of yoga every morning in a racketball court. This started when I pulled a hamstring at Snowbird. The stretches stopped all similar injuries. One time I was lax and I pulled the hamstring again. Now, I am never lax. When it comes to your knee injury, you're prabably past prevention, though.

I haven't had a knee operation, yet. Prevention seems to be the best approach. Occupational hazards must be avoided!!! I now experience a sharp pain in my right knee occasionally. I realized yesterday this is directly related to my lengthy driving experience (Boston Cab Driver for 12 years off/on, etc.) The thing about driving is that with an automatic you only use one leg. You also can suffer back trouble from sitting and stressing your frame in such a lopsided way. I used to run, competing in 10K races. After more than a decade of that, I saw it's effect on my knees. Now, interestingly enough, I'm running on snowshoes. It doesn't stress out the knees like Boston concrete. Now, we won't bring up the occupational hazards of sitting at a laptop, will we? This would be because the best way to avoid a hazard would be to stop the occupation.

No if I was "self-medicated" it probably wouldn't have happened. I was on shift last night.

Thats sucks.

Those Icy HOT pads look pretty cool - I saw a commmercial the other day - looks like they now make them specific to knees, wrists, ankles elbows....pretty neat stuff (If they work)

Bob R thank you for the advice on magnetotherapy I just did some research on it and happen to have a pretty powerful magnet in my office I took it and placed it inside the neoprene knee support that I have. It's on the outside of the knee. I don't know if it's psychological or not but I can almost feel the blood flowing to the knee and the pain isn't as bad.

Well went to the Docs and looks like I have a Grade 1 knee sprain. Hoping there's no tear in the MCL or LCL as my lateral movement is what's bothering me. Feeling much better but still have that weak spot when attempting to move the knee to the inside. No MRI until I re-evaluate it on Mon by taking a few runs. I'm feeling confident that with the help of a knee brace i'll back skiing by Mon plus I have a bus trip to Stratton next Fri. I'm not going to miss that it's an annual event. Ihearya on the body getting older than the mind. I'm still 29 with 12yrs experience.

Greg beat me with the post great news. Don't overdue it right off. Keep the magnet on right up until you ski and put it on right after you stop.
