Sorry for the cross post. If this is too commercial, I can delete it.

Hi guys,

I am having a round of 1ft X 4ft high quality posters printed of a panoramic photo i made of the bowl and the summit during a ski trip in june of 2006. our ski tracks are visible on the patch that would be what remains of the chute.

If anyone wants in, I'd be glad to have one made up for you.

The print will be on archival quality heavy stock paper using ink that will last 100 years.

i realize i'm not a pro, and so don't want to rip anyone off, but i'm still having this done nicely, so the costs are maybe a bit higher than you would expect. here's the breakdown: the prints cost me 30$ each, and after a tube and shipping, I'm thinking my final cost for each will be about 35$.

i'm hoping to get 45$ per print (shipped to lower 48 ). additional prints to the same address at the same time would be $35.

i'd accept more if you want to gift me a sixer for my troubles, or less (down to 35$) if you think it's not worth it but still want one, but i'm hoping to get in the 45$ range for each.

here's the shot (202kb ~ 1000X234 pixels... the original is well over 7500X1500 pixels)

pm me for a paypal address, or to tell me to take my stupid photography elsewhere

thanks for looking!

thanks for the compliments guys. the photo is the result of many hours of stitching and blending, so it is nice to hear the work is appreciated.

i should note that if anyone wants to see a high res inspection copy of a portion of the pano, i'd be happy to supply it so you can see the detail.

also, 4ftX1ft isn't actually as big as you think.

finally, i have other panos from around NE and upstate NY (of greater or poorer quality) at http://math.dartmouth.edu/~gpetrics/panorama which you might find interesting

Cool, I am getting addicted to pano stitches myself, although I'm lazier with the finishing :D
some stitches I was proud of:

Are you using a program for stitching or doing it manually?
And what is the resolution you need to print that large of a print?

...really like your panos on the site, especially ridge line and N. face of Gothics...
On "Mamma told me..." I can see the repeated patterns on the snow... lol, I did the same on my first pano stitch, which was of Tux bowl.

edit: aha, found it... I had to fill in all the snow on the bottom right:

dude that Rainier shot is DOPE. absolutely love it. also you are totally right about the repeating stuff in a few of those... in a sense all of those are still "Drafts" --- the stitching can leave behind artifacts that either need to be cropped out, or hidden with some creativity. for that particular one, i didn't know what i was doing, so i tried to use some creativity... for the panos that i'm proud of, i have chosen the cropping route so that the photo is true to reality. it's harder to do in a sense, but i think the results are better

as to resolution, i've found that i need to print at about 180 ppi for good results, and 260 ppi for really good results. that means to get 4 ft X 1 ft poster you'd need 9000 by 2000 pixels roughly for good results, and 12480 by 3100 pixels for very good results. these posters were printed using a scatter print algorithm that roughly equals 200 ppi printing quality

to stitch i use an open source program that i've made significant modifications to. for final adjustments i use the Gimp.

in other news, just got back from the print shop, and the first round looks real nice. i'll be mailing tomorrow morning. the guy who did the job for me said he can do another round at the same price anytime, so this isn't going anywhere for anyone who isn't sure at the moment.

andy, thanks for the encouragement! it sounds cheesy, but it really gets me psyched.

is mrs. zee getting her new equipment all tuned up and dialed in? carpe ski 'em!

His ski pictures are so cool! Esp "Ridgeline" http://math.dartmouth.edu/~gpetrics/panorama

Do you use a tripod on these and move the camera?

thanks skid!

we (my ski buddies and I) do this surprisingly low tech (and low gear)... although now that I'm getting some interest in these things as high quality posters i feel like we'll be going a bit higher tech this winter.

you may also be interested in a shot I just put up on the site called "sluice"... nice sunset lighting and tux soft snow

for anyone who's interested, the Tux poster (that i mentioned in the original post) is hanging at Basecamp Outfitters in Killington, VT (at the intersection of 4 and the access road). Mike Miller (the owner) is a great guy, the store is great, and also he agreed to hang one up on his wall to check it out. You can get contact info there!

Actually now that you mention that it reminded me of something I was thinking about the other day - there are many places that hang up artists' work for sale - cafes for one. Might not bring in money right away, but just like you did with Basecamp you could print some prints and make deals with establishments to put them up for sale with a cut of the sale price (or not, if you can haggle that).
Anyway, good to see that you got it showing somewhere out there!
