Well-put. Except you forgot Alaska....

Alaska is like Poland. I always forget it.

When I moved from AR to NC, a couple of people asked me how I was adjusting to the heat, and what I did with my fur coats. Took me a while to figure out what their confusion was.

Their confusion stemmed from the fact that they were from NC.

Probably, though I was at the AAA office her in Boston getting an international driving permit, and the woman there didn't know the abbreviation for Arkansas, and didn't seem too sure that it was in the US. And she works for AAA.

Would you really consider AR the midwest? I generally think of Mid-west as IL, MO, KS, NE, IN, IA, WI, MN, MI... I guess even though from a longitude perspective it is lined-up with most "mid-west" states, I think of it as the South.

If you notice, I said "generally in the midwest". The definition of midwest is variable. There is no definite answer. I would say it is mostly in the South although the northern 1/3 of the state could be tied to the midwest via Missouri.
