The definitive poll.

Choose your favorite neon clad, 220 cm-skiing hero and explain why he's your favorite.

And yes, the impetus for this poll came from watching The Blizzard of Oz and SnoWhat? over the weekend.

I would say Mike Hattrup is the better skier, but I envy and admire both. They both found a way to make their living skiing.

Ah but the poll is for your favorite.

I myself am torn, but I think I'm going with Hattrup, because in non electronic form, I'm more like how he is portrayed in his films. I'm not really the flashy, flamboyant attention getter that Plake is.

Hattrup was the better technical mogul skier. No question.

Plake has always had the big personality that enabled him to actually earn a respectable living from skiing. There's a difference between stainless steel nads & technique.

Agreed.

Plake came to Hunter years ago for a promotional event...he has major personality and drew a crowd like you wouldn't believe. He wanted to check out the mountain and the crowd just kind of went along with him. He proceeded to Upper Crossover which had some very nice irregular ice bumps that had some 6 foot deep troughs, typically nasty freeze/thaw/freeze stuff in mid-February. He flailed like a beginner and wiped out hard at the bottom.

And nobody cared, everyone just flailed and wiped behind him and we all laughed and whooped it up at the bottom. The guy has a great personality.

as mentioned, plake has a personality that is gold. favorite has more to do with personality and attitude than skiing ability when it comes to who i'd rather see on camera (though plake has DAMN good form in the bumps considering the size ski he uses!). so i'm going with plake, that guy will be making people laugh and cheer in ski movies into his 80s, no doubt.

Closer than I thought.

Plake sure has done a lot for skiing, and is certainly the more visible star. Hattrup's doing some pro guiding now, I got his picture of the website.

I'll have to save a bunch of money and take a tour with him just to say I skied with Mike Hattrup.

Plake. . . .. I met him at Tucks two springs ago. Very funny guy.

I was there that day! Bluebird, thousands of people in the bowl, folk racing the Inferno down Left Gulley. And if that wasn't good enough....

Plake hucked the Icefall.

One of the all-time great ski days for me!

On film Hattrup appears to be the better bump skier and Plake the better cliff hucker... and somewhere out there is Scott Schmidt the quiet legend...

I thought about including him, but he wasn't in SnoWhat, clearly the superior of the two movies...

Hmm... perhaps another poll is in order.

I just didn't know how many people would know of Scott Schmidt... esp. the younger kids around here.

I saw a clip of him, I think is SnoWonder... holy crap that dude can ski moguls blindingly fast.

I'm starting to get confused reading posts from both SkiDog and SkiDork.

And in generaly, I'm just confused.

I sometimes ski with a guy who uses SkiDogg on the KZOne - but it's not the same is the AZ SkiDog. Even more confusing...

BTW - SkiDogg on KZone is good people. SkiDog is prolly too...

I wondered about including Schmitty, too...

...to my way of thinking a better all mountain skier than either Plake or Hat (not to take anything away from either of those dudes). Checking out the sections of all Stumpy films that show the steepest of the steep skiing, and I think Schmidt ruled in terms of control and technique.

How about the Egans and the DesLaurier's, too....and Coombs, RIP.

Interesting Hat has gone on to be a big time tele-pimp, and Plake has gone on to being the same kid who loves skiing he ever was. Good ambassadors both.

Nothing like the good old days when my 203's were considered shorties....
