Because they simply put an SUV body on a pickup truck design.

^^^ this. I believe the Armada's and Sequoia's (along with the Explorers and Expeditions) rear end's are independent rear suspension. the GMT900 paltform for the Tahoe and Suburban use a 5link solid rear axle. That is the reason why. The solid axle passes all the way through so there isnt a spot to make a cavity for the rear seats. the GMT360 paltform (trailblazer, envoys, etc) also used solid axle.

Theres benefits and negatives to both designs

Solid rear axles are really fun when you hit bumps while cornering. Back when Boston's central artery was elevated, I used to change a half lane with every expansion joint going 70 mph northbound coming out of the South Station tunnel.

you can pull out the seats and store them in a garage, but when you need that 3rd row, your seat may be in your garage and with them in and folded down, they take up a ton of room and you lose the cargo area....i loved the flat folding 3rd row in my armada...
