***Many parents don't realize their baby's DNA is being stored in a government lab, but sometimes when they find out, as the Browns did, they take action. Parents in Texas, and Minnesota have filed lawsuits, and these parents' concerns are sparking a new debate about whether it's appropriate for a baby's genetic blueprint to be in the government's possession.***

wouldn't insurance companies just love to get their hands on these lists?

Yet another reason that home birth is a better option than letting the corporate hospitals get their mitts on healthy newborns.

Hmmm. After discovering that a routine outpatient colonoscopy ended up costing $4,500 with the hospital getting $3,600 of that, I'm now a believer. The whole system has practically no cost controls. My dad used to do routine oral surgery in his office. IV Vallium was all that was needed for most cases. The hospital OR was reserved for the real problem cases. Eventually, the insurance company made him stop because of the malpractice liability problem. No wonder health care consumes 16+% of our GDP. We really need to fix malpractice to get all the routine things out of the hospital.

I hate to get political about this but it amazes me how costly it is to practice defensive medicine. I should have been able to shop a routine colonoscopy as a procedure that is done in their office with a lightweight anesthetic like my dad used to use. It should have cost $1K or less, not $4,500 with all the massive hospital charges.
