Need some help. Have an opportunity at a great priced townhouse the week of 12/7-12/14/13 right near Heavenly. When does the ski season start out west? I know it is weather dependent, as it is here in the east, but would it be reasonably a safe bet to have decent conditions that week? Need to secure the rate by tomorrow afternoon...quick replies greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't commit to that and I'm pretty fond of Tahoe. The weather is simply too unpredictable. If you're ok with the possibility of little terrain being open and rolling with it, doing something other than skiing then maybe...

If you like casinos or just being a tourist somewhere nice go for it 100%, you can't miss
For skiing it's a dice roll (do you like gambling?) at worst the skiing will be on man made conditions. They do a decent job with snowmaking. It is really hit or miss that time of year, can be fully covered with deep snowpack or bare ground although something in between those is most likely.

If that's your only trip of the year I'd consider passing on it no matter how cheap it is. If you're planning a couple trips, it could be a nice start. And as Bob mentioned, there are plenty of other distractions out there.

Last year on those dates was a raging snowstorm, the year before was the WROD. Too unpredictable to call. I would steer clear of booking at Tahoe until mid January at the earliest, but thats just me.
