Just minding my own business - riding the skiers left side of a trail... Saw this guy making some big turns in the middle... Not a problem.. Thought he was making too big of a turn for the trail width but nothing too crazy...

I just rode the side of the trail and passed him... And suddenly - out of the blue - he traverses(bailed) out of the fallline and shoots DIRECTLY in front of me... I had the choice of either going into the trees of hit him... It happened so fast and took me by total suprise... decades of skiing/riding and I've NEVER hit anyone at speed before...

I hit him.... Cleaned his clock... He lost his skis, poles and goggles... I laid there for a minute - kinda stunned and thinking about if I broke anything..

I was REALLY mad... But I went to my "happy place" and told him no harm done... Myabe we should just go a litle slower on that part of the trail... Thinking I could use this to help show that snowbaorders are understading mountaineers...

He agreed then told me I should watch the downhill skier.... I felt the urge to kick his a$$ again but I closed my eyes and went back to my "happy place" and said - Maybe we should just BOTH slow down and be careful...

The reality of it was - he wasnt the downhill skier until he was right in front of me and I nailed him... I mean - does he look before he switches lanes in his car??? he came in from behind me a a really fast clip - and pinched me against the trees - he was totally in the back seat too...

So I have brusies just above my knees and a sore upper back because this guy couldnt slow down enough to stay in the falline...

Otherwise - a great weekend!!!

Let's see, you must be looking for some answers here or you wouldn't have posted. How do you think the Eagles feel after this weekend? Expect the unexpected.

Yah, if you hit someone make sure he is a lot smaller than you. It's hard for me to accept that not hitting him a second time would be accepted in a court of law as doing the right thing, though.

Ok. I would never want to purposely hurt anyone. BUT, if they ski stupid, you know like OUT OF CONTROL, or not TOTALLY in control, then them holding a mid mountain yard sale was just what the doctor ordered. How could he expect to live past lunch time if he's passing people on a carve, then slowing down. Brace for impact!

Had a guy ski onto my ski tails yesturday and he sent me flying. The KMART was crowded at this crossroad. He skiied over to me and asked me if I was ok. Instead of giving him an earful, I just said, $hit happens bro.

I want my kids to be able to stand up for themselves, but not be as obnoxious as I am, or was, or. . . well, I'm trying to change. Even in my 40's.

You did the right thing. I've noticed that sometimes people are embarrassed about their fall and say silly things. A few Friday's ago, I was waiting in line to get onto the proper lift line at Hunter (you know right before you get into the roped off area.) This guy comes flying off the hill out of control ... zips past a ton people ... ski's right over my tips (perpendicular) .... lands on his a$$ and has the nerve to give me a dirty look and murmer something under his breath at me. I hate to ruin my karma while skiing so I just checked around me to see the reaction of everyone else to make sure that I didn't screw up somehow. When I saw the stunned looks on their faces I just shook my head and continued on the line. I'm assuming he was so embarrassed by the incident (he was about as graceful as a newborn giraffe) he had to do something to save face. Oh well I was better off letting it go, I ski to escape drama, not to catalyze it.

It may be true that we're a bunch of jerks, but really, you aren't just relating the story are you? You're looking for our sympathy. We weren't there so in reality we only have your side of the story. The only thing I could add you wouldn't like. That is, you should have taken in consideration this guy's potential for eratic and unpredictable behaviour. You observed that there was something wrong with his technique and that should have alerted you to the danger of a collision. I don't like this very common reaction to these kinds of accidents i.e. contemplating futher violence either.

Not only did I find your comment trite, your response was sanctimonious.

Dude, the guy is relating a story from this weekend, and it took some balls to write it here considering he knew some of you would likely trash him. No, you weren't there, but I was. I saw DMC after it happened and he was shaken up. Bad scene.

Yeah, accidents happen. If I had to consider erratic behaviour on other people's part everytime I did something I wouldn't leave the house! The guy he hit was an unguided missle who shouldn't have been on that trail.

Hey, first of all I understould that you prabably had an unavoidable accident. However, this last statement makes it clear you have an attitude. Either you should have laughed it off like we did or you should have examined in hind-sight looking for what you might have done wrong. Instead you make the claim that since you are a better or more accomplished athelete your space was invaded by this guy, that it was all his fault and that he should have been punished for it. Wow!!! Maybe you have a chip on your shoulder.

There appears to be some urine in beswift's Cheerio's this morning...

It's tough when you get blindsided like that- it's so hard to tell if youwere, in fact, in the wrong. Sounds liek this guy was cannonballing, though. You do the best you can, try to pick your spot to pass, and play the hand you're dealt. If possible, you mix as many inappropriate metaphors as you can. The guy was probably embarrased, and shaken up, hence his comments. You did right- brush it off, and go on with your day.

The only chip I have on my shoulder is for you right now....

I was mad - but I didnt act... I tried to be as cool as possible... Even the patroller that attended commented on it..

Maybe thats what we get out of it and why I releated the story....

I am just messing with you man. Hunter is a very tough place to ski due to the amount of people on the trail. Before I moved to NH Hunter was one of the places I skiied while living on Long Island. I do not miss the crowds at hunter 1 bit.
