If you are involved with Target, please convince the other members of your company to bring a store to somewhere north of Concord, NH. How about Burlington? Upper Valley? We have Walmart and K-mart here in the UV. The K-Mart used to be a really nice store, but now it is shopworn and Walmart is, well, Walmart. Cheap junk that is poor quality. Target is awesome IMHO. Decent quality stuff, not bad prices, clean new stores and friendlier folks.

Re: Target - I feel your pain. At least you have one about an hour away. Our closest is 2ish hours (Glens Falls).

I like Target but I can't say that I would drive more than 20 mins to go there. It is head and shoulders above Walmart.

I DESPISE WALMART...sorry just had to say it...

I can honestly say I havent shopped in a Walmart in 5 years.

Target...(pronounced Tar jay to make it sound high end HA).....is IMHO a good quality store...I been shopping at them since back in 90 or so when they were only a "midwest" chain.

Love or hate Wally World, they are an amazing company, from a business operations standpoint. The things they've done with supply chains is astounding.

As for shopping there, only if you paid me.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know how Target handles their supply chain.

Reason why I was ask, Frontline had a documentry which showed how WalMart has forced their supply chain to mass produce everything in China just to drive down the cost (hence increase their margin). Years past, I remember a time when WalMart would say they were proud to sell things made in the USA.

Wal Mart was once an exclusive USA products retailer. No more. They pushed for trade with China and now sell lots of junk. I forecast that they will, like all chains, fade away. Right now their stuff is just junk and we don't go there. Tar-jay is just hip! :D

Target is doing a lot of the same things, technologically, with their supply chains that WalMart does (hell, everyone is, to one extent or another). What WalMart does, though, is become a supplier's larget (or only) customer, and really force them to cut costs. The only way to that effectively and on the scale WalMart requires is to outsource production.

I thought it was pretty interesting when they quit using the "We buy "Made in the USA" so you can, too!" slogan.

I, for one, still read the labels and buy "Made in the USA" when possible.

Getting harder and harder, isn't it? And it will continue to.

I'm reading "The World is Flat" right now. Once you get through the pop-tech stuff at the beginning, it's a little scary.

I just dont agree with their "strongarm" business practices...I prefer to spend my money with the "local" shop whenever possible. We need choices. If Walmart continues its exponential growth at its current rate we will ONLY have one place to shop and that will be WALMART...

Just for a small fact....I believe Walmart entered the "gorcery" business in Mexico sometime in the last 5-7 years and are ALREADY the #1 grocer in mexico....does that sound wrong to anyone else?

But in the end you're right ....love em or hate em...looks like they're around for a while..

Sams original idea was on target...but hasn't been followed..

Check out a book called "the Case Against Walmart" it may open a few eyes.

They're the #1 grocer in the US, too.

WalMart's at a critical point right now- they've squeezed every last penny out of costs, and ignored teh social aspects of their business, which is starting to catch up with them- wages, healthcare, corporate citizenship, etc. Is it too late for them, or can they reform themselves quickly and convincingly enough to keep going?

It costs WalMart about 5 times as much per square foot to open a store than it costs Target. Hard to maintain growth when that's the case.

Everyone posting in this thread needs to watch the south park episode titled "something wal-mart comes this way" when I am forced to go to wal-mark (as they have created a monopoly on some items in bing) I walk around yelling "its the wal-mart". wont get it unless you see the episode

I've got Target, Kohl's, K-Mart, Wal-Mart and a bunch of other stores to choose from.

I use Wal-Mart for cleaning supplies, school supplies, cd's and stuff like that. On occasion I will pick up a jersey or t, not expecting it to last long, I got through a lot of White ones...coffee always seems to make it's way to them. I get shorts there on ocassion too. Where else can you pick up jeans shorts for under $10? As far as other clothing there, the only thing ever worth buying there has the White Stag label, though it is nothing like White Stag used to be.

My REAL clothes, the ones I wear for work and when I go places come from other stores.

I've never really been to Target. There's one in Concord, but going shopping in West Lebanon is closer for me. Usually if I can't find it there, I just order it online. I used to go to Concord because they have Home Depot, but now theres one in Claremont and West Leb, so Concord has seen quite a bit less of me.
