Resort or Ski Area: Killington Resort

Conditions: Groomed fast/Some hard pack off groomed trails. Late day ice.

Trip Report:
The day began with chilly temps in the single digits, but bright, cheery sunshine. First run on Needle’s Eye delivered speed on easy-turning groomed corn. Speed was the main word of the day. Took a scenic tour on Carpenter’s Run to Home Stretch down to the beginning of the Skyship Gondola. Very pretty cruiser. Scooted over to Bear Peak to try to beat the crowds gathering for the rail contest. Snow not as good as expected. Wildfire was already scratchy and the bumps had been groomed away. Grrrr.

Best runs were Skyburst and Dream Maker. Bumps on Outer Limits were paltry, so we passed and headed over to Super Star. Decent enough, but showing wear early. Fast, fast, fast. Next off to the North Ridge Triple. Rime, Reason, Upper Double Dipper all speedy with lots of turnability. Powerline and Ridge Run full of scratch. Lower East Fall icy but doable.

All slopes off the Snowden Quad were excellent. Too bad the lift is such a snooze. Gave the Low Rider Glades a shot. Very scraped off; not what you expect in the trees. Smacked my head into one of the buggers. Thank you once again, Helmet. On the flip side, Patsy’s Glades were an absolute delight. Clearly they don’t get as much traffic. Royal Flush has some decent bumps with only a few bare patches and scratch. Ended the day with some cruisers at Ram’s Head and beer at Snowshed.

Trip Report:
The last day of Pico’s season dawned cold and clear. Temps at the top were six degrees to start but it did warm up to the upper 20’s. Managed to haul our butts over there in time for first tracks, despite a rather late night the evening before. Totally worth it.

Corduroy everywhere and lots of fluff. Hit the summit early despite the cold. Pike was in excellent shape. Hit it a few times in a row. Had some bumps on skiers’ right side. Pretty decent but had to keep a look out for the occasional slab of ice. Upper KA was also delightful. Sunset 71 was scratchy and chunky. Ski patrol reported Giant Killer to be quite ugly, so we headed to the Summit Glades. Bumps were HARD. Gave the knees a work out. Bailed two-thirds down.

It was the annual Close Of Pico ski party for our group, Monmouth Ski Club. Got about 14 members to line up on the first ridge of 49er and ski down together for a photo op. Was a lot of fun.

Next we slipped across the mountain on Easy Street to check out Birch Woods. Scratchy but ok. Just ok. Birch Glades was hard pack in the morning, but a bit softer in the afternoon. Lower Giant Killer was the same. There were some pretty sweet tree skiing over there as well. All the lower trails off the summit were excellent.

Racing ended early so we hit the ABC area. A slope dicey; B slope fast and fun. The Outpost Triple yielded fantastic snow on Bronco, mixed scratch, and bumps on Wildfire and really nasty conditions on Sidewinder. Pipeline was a mixed bag, but had some fun bumps. Top of Doozie glades was terrible, but pretty decent past the drop.

Highlight of the day for us, was our club’s tailgate party in the parking lot. Mark, our cook, fired up a couple grills and turned out some of the best wings ever to hit a barby as well as some juicy burgers and dogs.

Reporter from the Rutland Herald stopped by to document the festivities. Mark contributed all the meat while taking donations for the Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports. We were thrilled to raise nearly $600 for the program. It was a most excellent day. Too bad it’s the last for Pico this season.

Killington was shedding Rams Head and Skyship base as well all in great condtion. It's just that time of year. Not enough of us hardcores. Still plenty of good terrain open though. Everyone needs to go get it.
