Resort or Ski Area: Loon Mountain
Conditions: Cloudy, moments of dispersed sunshine. 20 degrees or so. Slightly windy, worsened in the afternoon. No fresh snow. Hard packed snow, was very fun and easy to pick up speed. Less ice that other mountains this year, but I blame the timing of when I went to those (Cannon, Jay, Stowe). Very surprising how good the snow was.
Trip Report: In my opinion, Loon is a very fun mountain. Sort of a magic wonderland feel to it. But I told myself last year that I would never again go to Loon on the weekend, and very optimistically decided to take a personal holiday from work on Thursday. As I should have expected, no fresh snow from a very teasing storm. Either way, left Boston at around 8 AM, got a silly speeding ticket, and ended up on the mountain by 10:20 AM.
Strangely there was a line at the bottom quad when I first arrived, but didn't see any lines after that. Perhaps a 3 to 5 minute wait if I was in a group for the gondola, but that was only at peak times (and anyways I was alone). All lifts were running other than the mid-mountain triple. A couple of the woodsy trails were closed.
All around was a great day. Amazed at the snow conditions considering the lack of snow fall in our area, they really work hard there. No just one snow storm... is that for asking too much?
