Date(s) Skied: April 3rd, 2010 (Doug Coombs Day)

Resort or Ski Area: Mount Washington

Conditions: Warm

Trip Report: Started skinning up the cog just after 6AM, got to the Great Gulf at around 8AM. I skied one run in the area, Austin did three runs. Went to the summit. Skied Upper Ammo to lower Monroe Brook. Great day overall. First real day of touring for me, and I love it... although I don't love the blisters I have on my ankles right now haha...

So now for the pictures you all want to see, comments wanted/appreciated, thanks:

Beautiful View, a lot of people were skiing that north facing area in the Great Gulf, my legs were far to tired after one to try bootpacking again:

Holy crap! It is amazing how much melted in just one day between when I was up and when you guys were up. Going QUICK! I hope to be back up either Thurs or Fri depending on the weather.

Yeah even Austin said stuff we skinned that was completely covered in the morning had 10 foot patches of grass to cross in the afternoon. I wish I took the last picture looking up the Cog in the morning as well as a basis for comparison.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Probably a dumb question, but, is that part of Bretton Woods or Wildcat or neither? I really like what I see and am thinking about going this weekend. Could you please give some details of the trip?

In my mind, northern New England
^ Neither. These are backcountry areas which are not maintained or patrolled. Because of this reason, you probably won't get much detailed information (because you don't want to be responsible for folks being lost out there or involved in an avalanche, etc.). However, if you have the basic lay of the land, you can probably piece together the data. If you're starting out, the best place to begin is to get a copy of Goodman's book on Backcountry Skiing in New Hampshire and Maine (also, Backcountry skiing in VT and NY) and, if you intend to get into Tux, go to www.tuckerman.org. Always proceed with caution and ski conservatively in the backcountry. This is probably not the answer you were looking for but the most important thing is to make sure that skiers get to ski another day.
