Mt. Morgan & Mt. Percival, NH

Date Hiked: 04/23/07

Trails(s) Hiked: Mt. Morgan Trail, Crawford-Ridgepole Trail, Mt. Percival Trail, Morse Trail

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Dry, mud, water, snow

Though I had hoped to hit Mt. Israel, reading reports from various sources from various years (especially one of lots of postholing on Mt. Israel recently), I decided to try Mt. Morgan and Mt. Percival.

The gate to the Mt. Morgan parking lot was closed, so I, along with the hikers who had arrived previously, had to park on the side of the road.

From there, the Mt. Morgan Trail was easy going (other than some mud), before steepening on the final approach of the top of the ridge. At this point the trail was basically a brook - fortunately there was some room to pass on the sides.

Soon I was at the junction of the Mt. Morgan Trail and the cliffs trail - I went for the cliffs trail. The ladders are fun, as is the cave (though it was a bit narrow with the accumulated snow).

The views from the ledge were strong, but overcast due to in part the haze of the 80 degree day - same story on the summit looking north and west.

The Crawford-Ridgepole Trail to Mt. Percival had a lot of blowdowns departing the Mt. Morgan summit, making for some rough going. Upon arriving at the Mt. Percival summit, the clouds started to pass over, making for nicer views. Though Mt. Morgan is nice, I think I prefer the views from Mt. Percival, as well as the larger ledge area.

The Mt. Percival Trail was dryer and in better shape than the Mt. Morgan Trail, allowing for a decent descent. The Morse Trail, crossing from the base of the Mt. Percival Trail to the Mt. Morgan Trail, was a bit muddier, but still passable.
