Actually, I'm solidly in the 21st century, most people are living in the 20th century with cable tv.....

- fios internet ($50/month)
- 1080p projector on 120" screen
- dedicated Gaming/HTPC with high end video card, SSD, tv tuner card w/antenna, wireless keyboard, etc

I have switched back to cable after having FIOS for five years. I get 2x the bandwidth and save $100/month on my bill.

Is there any way to watch it live on NBC's internet?

If not, I might have to go to one of those pirate websites run out of Europe and watch it on my computer.

But come hell-or-high-water, I'll be watching the men's downhill live.

It's not pirate. It's VPN. I can get into the UK and watch BBC or into Canada and watch CBC.
All of the NBC shows begin at either 7 or 8pm. They add some coverage on the weekend afternoons.

It's not clear to me that NBC streams on their web site. I tried to watch their ordinary programming and it didn't seem to work.

Our cable companies and NBC...just a bunch of companies eager to make $$$ AND serve the public's interest...:puke:
Get CBC TV if possible...their schedule covers a lot, not just snippets of Canadian athletes..

LCD/LED tv's = FAIL. My 2013 model DLP projector handles motion better than any LCD ever made, colors and blacks are just as good. Only thing that can beat it is plasma but good luck getting any bigger than 65".

Oh, and by the way....a 120" screen is more than double the size of an 80". 125% more viewable area. Enjoy your tiny TV!

Oh boy, its a "mine is bigger than yours" thread ;)

But you'd think a relatively high profile event like downhill would be broadcast live on television on at least some channel.

Outside of Men's hockey (and thus women's hockey to satisfy NBC's penchant political correctness) I doubt it.

My only experience with a VPN network has come during the last few months, but I use it on my work laptop for accessing my company's data/network while working at home.

If I connect to that VPN would it work? I could connect the laptop with HDMI to my computer, which wouldnt be too bad.

I have yet to see cable sustain it's speed on downloads. It will start fast and quickly drop off to 10% speed. I have the slowest fios, it locks in at full speed (1.85 megabytes/sec) most of the time and sustains it, up to several gigs.

Also ow would love a projector but you need a dark room.

I use mine at night in a room with no light control. I have a light on to the side and in the next room and its perfectly fine. Most modern projectors are extremely bright.

those prices seem crazy considering you can get a 60" Panasonic Plasma for around $2500-$3000

I wonder what warrants the extra cost? The fact that people willing to pay for that kind of TV have money to burn?

Serious? You could get a very good panasonic 60" plasma last year for $699..........

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/88816/frys---60-panasonic-viera-tc-p60u50-600hz-plasma-hdtv

I almost went that route, but that would be 1/4th the size of my current screen...lol.

The 85" and 103" are professional series models, panasonic doesn't offer those sizes in a consumer grade series. The smaller pro grade plasmas are still many thousands of dollars. So, figure on the large sizes - small production, low yield on the panels, model specific electronics and very high grade build quality - all adds up to very high pricing.

I just plug my laptop into external 24" widescreen LCD display when I feel the need to pimp out my entertainment center.

If you have the right cable provider you can sign up. Says all 98 medal events will be streamed (don't think that includes qualifiers, hockey round robins, etc). Appears to be a single stream rather than a separate stream for each event if there are multiples but I'm not positive about that.

We'll see how that plays out in the next day or two otherwise I'll VPN through my employer's London gateway and stream BBC.

I don't see a listing of all the replays even though it said it has. And it doesn't seem to have a way to search what's available.

I'm trying to figure out whether this is just online TV (they set the schedule and I have to watch at a given time) or is it really a list of events I can pick and choose to watch???

I thought about that but not sure how to do it practically... my employer definitely have a Canadian office but I'm not quite sure how to park my connection into that particular corner...

I'm with you; I haven't figured out how the site works either. It's quite confusing. That's why I'll have to dive in once they start showing events. And it's also not clear whether it's on demand or only streams live. Haven't found an archive yet. If it's crappy, then I'll watch through BBC.

I can configure which server cluster to access through VPN, London, Bangalore or Eagan, MN. No advice for you with your own offices but you could always subscribe to a VPN service for a month.

I don't have the option to choose which server cluster to access. As soon as I tunnel through, my connection got dumped into my own default desktop (actually a virtual box but it's definitely a US based virtual server).

I think I have to find a server box (either real or virtual) that's located in Canada to remote into...

Or, I might see if I can re-configure the browser to use a proxy that's located in Canada

I was pleasantly surprised when watching NBC last night, to see that they were focusing on the American and Canadian snowboarders, even interviewing the Canadians. Usually American coverage only covers Americans, while CBC and CTV will focus on notable competitors regardless of nationality. It is also often tape-delayed, even when not necessary. In short, my experience is that American television coverage tends to be more selective and narrowly focused, while Canadian is more broad in inclusive.

I was not impressed with the trash talk toward Shaun White. I'm glad Steve Podborski (remember him?) spoke out against it.

I was on assignment in Detroit 16 years ago and enjoyed the CBC coverage. Though a bit too much curling for my taste.

NBC loses their ass every olympics...there is a reason why ESPN wont bid on it!

Too many safety meetings?

NBC lost money on the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, but previous games were profitable, if not wildly so. It has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988.
Last year, NBC outbid Fox and ESPN to gain the rights for four more Olympics, paying $4.38 billion through 2020.
