Neck Gaiter rash...

Not sure if this should be here or in gear, but what the hey. Whenever I wear my REI neck gaiter in the cold (below 10 degrees) I get a rash down by my adams apple, moisture collects in the front and saturates the inside of it.
I was thinking about wearing a thinner neck gaiter under it, but was concerned that would trap even more moisture.
Anyone ever have this happen to them? The neck gaiter can be seen here:http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=47823888&parent_category_rn=40003633&vcat=REI_SEARCH

Grow a cool neck-beard. Then you won't notice the rash.

Gaiter trouble.

If it is cold enough to wear a neck gaiter I wear a "no name" version of the REI Headliner instead. I "modify" it (translation: I cut out a slot for my mouth) so that when I am generating a lot of breath I blow it out the slot and it does not condense and freeze in the area in front of my mouth and neck. My wife and daughter yell at me when I stick my tongue out of the hole. The say I remind them of Hannibal Lector (sp?) and that it is "disgusting." Works for me! I have done the same with standard neck gaiters also. I generate a lot of hot breath when skiing hard and that is the only way to not have an irritating "freeze-up."

Does this hole get any bigger after you wash it? I thought of doing that, but was afraid that the hole would get much larger with each wash.

I can't stand the moisture accumulating on a gaitor or face mask.I modified my facemask by cutting out the mouth.Really helps.I almost never wear it anymore though.I am a balaclaver lover now. It's all I use when the temps get below zero and that wind is howling.Try one. They only cost $10.

Cool thanks. I have Thunder Sports and EMS right by work. I'll check them out, I'm heading to Killington on Wed, and it's supposed to stay pretty cold.

Sounds like a form of delayed razer burn. I get that sometimes if I'm sweating a lot after shaving in the morning. Try applying aftershave in the morning and again at noontime to kill the bacteria that thrives in the humid environment. The air vent for your mouth will probably work too. :spin:

Might also be some type of allergy to one of the fabrics used in the gaitor. Additionally, if you've never washed it before, do so using the same detergent you always use for regular clothes, this might take care of it.

One last question, if you're wearing a turtleneck or a high collared sweater (and not just in skinng situations) have you noticed a similar situation happening??

I've washed it a couple times, let it air dry, so the only detergent is the same one I use for everything. This hasn't happened before with a turtleneck or anything like that. The gaiter got really moist on the inside, to the point where I could squeeze the moisture out of it between runs. I got a face mask/neck gaiter at EMS yesterday, hopefully that will do the trick and keep me warm tomorrow with a tepid high of 6 degrees at Killington.

You might also want to check out the Smartwool offerings as well; I've found that wool-based products breathe better for me than fleece-based ones, and the Smartwool stuff is much warmer at the same thickness compared to normal fleece.
