So I was checking out Blue's mountain cam and noticed a cam for a "U.S. Luge." Huh? A little research revealed that they opened the 2000' course earlier this month, just next to the tubing runs (which are a lot of fun).
*** This track marks the fourth U.S. luge run but only the second natural site in the country, according to Gordy Sheer, director of marketing and sponsorship for the U.S. Luge Association. Natural sites such as Blue Mountain and its counterpart in Michigan are made without artificial refrigeration.“There are very few places in the country that have these snow-making capacities,” Sheer said. *** Sheer, an Olympic silver medalist,...said Blue Mountain was being used this past weekend as a recruitment site for potential members of the USA Luge Team, from which Olympians are chosen. The Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon County, ski area has set up temporary, smaller luge courses the past four years during its Winter Festival. That’s where Sheer recruited Theresa Buckley in 2009. Buckley, a 15-year-old from Salisbury Township, is the current USA Luge Youth National Champion for 2011. ***

From Jay's indoor water park to Blue's luge, it appears that ski areas are creating non-skiing magnets to draw in more customers.
