Typical Game is 15 minutes long (Snap to tackle)
16 games each team plays (regular season)

if a player was to play every down of every game, he'd play a total of 4hrs of game time/season.

Pay to play ratio seems a tad off in my opinion....

Dork....no offense....but at the end of the day, they are getting paid to play a game....they arent saving lives or teaching the youth of America...but thats another debate..just was throwing out an interesting fact that many may not have considered when they are watching a 4 hr game on tv....

Agreed, but its just like any other entertainment. How about movie stars?

It generates millions, even billions. Its what we americans want.

And the rest is taken up by commercials...

Well the commercials are a better alternative to watching a bunch of 300lb+ guys in pants that are way too form fitting trying to get up an waddle back to the huddle and then the line of scrimmage! ;)

Thank god for the cheerleaders for those of us actually in the stadium viewing pleasure in between plays!

This, sadly. What's the job worth? Whatever we're willing to pay for it.

Tells you something about the relative worth of athletes vs teachers vs policemen vs firefighters vs garbage men etc etc etc

Of all the professional sports, I think NFL players are paid the most appropriately. Overpaid compared with the normal person? Sure. But, all top flight entertainers are. Hell, I heard on the radio the other day a rapper named Soldier Boy bought himself a 50M luxury Jet for his 21st birthday.

The reason I think NFL players are paid most appropriately in comparison to other professional sports is two reasons.

A. A player can be fired before his contract is up. They still collect their signing bonus, but they are out of luck with their yearly salary if they stop performing. In all other sports, players are paid for the length of their contract whether they perform or not.

B. It is an extremely hazardous game. The only players who play 4 hours total a season are offensive linemen. Their average lifespan? 52 years. League average is only 55, where it's 78 for all Americans. Game is brutal and takes it's toll. I can see why they do everything possible to make as much money as they can during a very short career.

i feel they should be paid on performance like golfers, you dont make the cut, no payday.....most pro golfers arent flying in private jets, they are driving their own vans from touney to tourney....

That may have been the case a decade or so ago, but if you're out on the PGA tour, and successfully keep your card year in and year out (gotta finish in he top 125 on the money list to do so), you're earning before any endorsement deals, somewhere in the neighborhood of atleast 1.3-1.4 million. Sure you've got lots of expenses from travel to caddy fees to tournament entry fees, but you're still living very comfortably and unless you have a fear of flying, your flying atleast commercial, if not chartered private from tournament to tournament these days.

If your talking about the "minor leagues" (the nationwide tour) then yup, there's usually a bunch of driving, and often carpooling from tournament to tournament

I don't have much to add to this but the following: I watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.

Sounds about right. My folks used to be members at Crown Point CC in VT. Keegan Bradley grew up playing there. He won the club championship at 12 years old

He's got a win, 3 top 10s and 9 top 25s in 23 starts this year. He's missed the cut 8 times. Tour winnings so far for the year are just under 2M.

I'd venture to say that if you stay in the top 50 on the tour for 5 years, you'll be pretty well set for life. Not uber rich, but can easily have a sizeable nest egg.

They manage to fill huge stadiums every Sunday. They sell billions of dollars worth of advertising.

Exactly. This country values entertainment above things that actually matter.

Maybe I just don't see the value in professional sports like many others do. Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching football from time to time, but I wouldn't pay more than $10 or $20 to go watch it. For a baseball game it would have to be free, and even then I'd have to think about it. There's much more important things in life to spend money on.

One thing that has to be worth a little bit of money to anyone on these forums is the start of the NFL season (even pre-season games) is kind of a turning point in the off season. It's right about the time I start really getting excited for the upcoming Ski season. NFL signifies to me that it's just around the corner.
